Excerpt from the Book

CRITICAL DISCUSSION OF ADAPTIVE SYSTEMS IDENTIFIABLE AT WORK ENVIRONMENT

The researcher’s effort to discuss adaptive systems at work environment has heavily relied on expert work of (Anderson, 1999; Axelrod and Cohen, 1999; Holland, 1992, 1995; Mitleton-Kelly, 2000; Peters, 1987; Raziq & Maulabakhsha, 2015; Waldrop, 1992).

As earlier shared in the introduction, Kibaale Development Company is a legal entity operating in Uganda, one of the East African countries. It is given as an example of the work environment to be critically discussed in relation to adaptive systems. As mentioned in the introduction as well, organizations are recognized as adaptive systems (Anderson, 1999; Axelrod and Cohen, 1999).The complex adaptive systems (CAS) of the company adapts to changes as presented in the prevailing environment of business. The focus here is to those changes that impact the functioning/ operation of the business.

The company as an organization is exposed to emerging change forces originating from both internal and external factors. The organization has to be responsive to these factors so as to ignite favour. As an organization it has to be mindful of how to harness relationship with stakeholders towards changes. Senge (1990) argued that the need for systems thinking is more crucial today because of the increasing complexity. Therefore, the ability of the company to survive and grow is dependent on its interconnection with the stakeholders. The word stakeholders includes even those regarded as external but being affected in one way or the other by the operations of the organization(Churchman et al.,1957).
