Excerpt from the Book

Rules and Procedures for Promoting a Positive Learning Environment

From the reading assignment of last week, I learned that classroom discipline plays a vital role in creating a positive and well-managed learning environment. Classroom discipline includes the creation and implementation of classroom rules and procedures. Based on this week's study, I gathered that classroom rules can either contribute to or hinder a positive classroom environment. Classroom rules differ from procedures: a classroom rule is a behavioral norm that students are expected to follow, and there are consequences if they do not, while a classroom procedure is an action that students are expected to complete under certain circumstances.

On the very first day of school, as a teacher who has chosen the low control model of discipline, also known as the guiding model that empowers students to manage their own behavior while the teacher takes a supportive role, I would involve the students in creating the rules and procedures for our classroom. Jim Fay & David Funk's Teaching with Love and Logic Theory provides a comprehensive approach to classroom discipline that focuses on building positive relationships, promoting student responsibility, and teaching problem-solving skills. Our rules would not come with punishment as a consequences as we are focusing on solving problems that could hinder us from having a positive learning environment.
