This research proposal investigates the ethical concerns shaping public acceptance of autonomous vehicles with the goal of addressing these concerns and fostering widespread adoption. Objectives include exploring ethical decision-making, determining public acceptance factors, analyzing state regulations and liability, examining privacy and data security implications, developing ethical guidelines, and assessing the societal impacts of autonomous transportation.

Acknowledging the crucial role of public acceptance, the literature review scrutinizes safety, liability, privacy, and employment aspects related to autonomous driving. The proposed methodology involves qualitative and quantitative data collection from the public, experts, and government officials through surveys, interviews, and focus groups. Initial findings suggest a significant influence of ethical concerns on public acceptance, with ongoing exploration of the hypothesis that autonomous driving raises ethical issues.

Data analysis employs literature research, document analysis, and triangulation for enhanced validity and reliability. This research, focused on midterm results, aims to provide insights for policymakers, automakers, and stakeholders involved in the development and deployment of autonomous driving technologies. By addressing ethical concerns and promoting public trust, the aim is to contribute to widespread acceptance and successful integration of autonomous vehicles into transportation systems in the future.

Research Objectives and Focus Areas

This research aims to identify the key ethical concerns and considerations that influence public acceptance and trust in autonomous vehicles. By analyzing both qualitative and quantitative data, the study seeks to propose strategies for increasing public trust, ensuring safety, and fostering a responsible adoption of this technology.

  • Investigation of ethical decision-making frameworks in autonomous driving.
  • Evaluation of public attitudes and perceptions toward self-driving technology.
  • Comparative analysis of government regulations and legal liability concerning autonomous vehicles.
  • Assessment of privacy and data security risks associated with autonomous transportation.
  • Development of ethical guidelines to guide the deployment of autonomous systems.

Excerpt from the Book

1. Introduction

Autonomous vehicles have the potential to fundamentally change the way we travel and get around. Self-driving vehicles promise greater safety, efficiency and convenience on the roads. However, with these technological advances come ethical concerns that impact public acceptance of autonomous vehicles. With this in mind, the question arises: what ethical concerns and considerations influence public acceptance of autonomous vehicles, and how can these concerns be addressed to increase public trust and acceptance? To answer this question, it is important to provide a comprehensive overview of the real-world ethical challenges associated with self-driving vehicles. Previous discussions have often focused on unlikely dilemma scenarios in which the vehicle must make difficult choices, such as between protecting occupants and protecting pedestrians1. Such discussions neglect many other ethical issues that are relevant in the context of autonomous vehicles. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the broader ethical dimension in order to facilitate an informed public discussion.

Public acceptance of autonomous vehicles plays a critical role in their success and widespread implementation. Research has shown that people's opinions and attitudes about this new technology vary widely. While some individuals recognize the benefits such as improved safety and more efficient traffic flow, others have significant concerns about ethical issues and human control over driving2. Therefore, it is important to identify the ethical considerations that influence public acceptance of autonomous vehicles. In this research, the key ethical concerns and considerations that influence public trust and acceptance of autonomous vehicles will be identified. In doing so, issues of safety, privacy, liability, and social impact will be addressed. In addition, it should be explored how these concerns can be addressed and resolved to increase public trust and promote acceptance of autonomous vehicles.
