The paper investigates the issue of farmers-herders' conflicts and their profound impacts on food security in Benue State, Nigeria. This research employs the qualitative research method, using indepth oral interviews and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) as tools for data collection. Through an extensive examination of the conflict's causes, effects, and potential mitigation strategies, this study offers a comprehensive understanding of this complex challenge. It finds that the causes of these conflicts are diverse, ranging from illegal encroachments into farmlands, climate change, population growth, and inadequacies in government policies.

These root causes have far-reaching implications for food security in the region. The effects of farmers-herders' conflicts on food security are dire. Loss of human lives, mass displacement, land degradation, and increased hunger have been identified as the significant consequences. These effects compound an already fragile food security situation in Benue State, rendering it a matter of critical concern. In response to these challenges, this research proposes a multifaceted approach to mitigate the conflict's impact on food security. This includes enlightenment campaigns for value reorientation, the replacement of offensive terms and policies, the formation of open public forums for discussions, the avoidance of hate speeches, and the implementation of an effective land distribution approach. These strategies are aimed at fostering unity and understanding between farmers and herders, leading to sustainable peace and ultimately enhancing food security in Benue State.

Excerpt from the Book

Herdsmen-Farmers Conflict

Herdsmen-Farmer Conflict refers to the violent confrontations and clashes that occur between two distinct groups in Nigeria: farmers and herders (Francis, Kenneth, & Nkama, 2022). Farmers are individuals whose primary occupation revolves around cultivating land and growing crops for both personal consumption and commercial purposes (Erunke & Aku, 2022). They may also rear livestock such as poultry and cattle. While some farmers may have their own farms using modern machinery or hired farm laborers, others may travel with their labor as a commodity, seeking markets to earn income and support their families. On the other hand, herders, also known as Fulani pastoralists, are nomadic individuals whose main livelihood involves raising livestock, particularly cows and sheep, for commercial gain (E.Erunke & Aku, 2022). They move from one area to another, seeking green pastures and water sources for their animals without a fixed pattern of movement (Francis, Kenneth, & Nkama, 2022).

This conflict emerges due to a lack of cooperation and compatibility between these two groups, as they hold opposing views, ideas, and interests. The clash can result in aggression, struggles, and even wars, leading to changes in social structures and relationships (Nomor & Ominyi, 2021). The conflict arises from differences in thought processes, attitudes, understanding, and perceptions, which often escalate into heated arguments, physical altercations, and loss of lives (Okoli & Addo, 2018). The Herdsmen-Farmer Conflict has significant implications for food security, agricultural productivity, and socio-economic stability in Nigeria, warranting a comprehensive examination of its root causes and potential solutions (Apenda, 2016).
