Excerpt from the Book

2. LAUREN YU, MANAGING DIRECTOR AT DIRECT RAILS AND RAILS PLC.

Lauren Yu is the actual Managing Director of Direct Rails and Rails, who are a freight transportation company with businesses in the transportation of nuclear waste by rail. Lauren has left school at the very young age of 16, with only three O-Level qualifications. After working for a short period at Inland revenue, Lauren has realized it did not correspond to her expectations, and so she went back to school where she studied Business Studies, with a specialisation in Finance. After knocking many doors, she was finally hired by Pound Care Forster, where she became more experienced with accountancy, leading to her receiving her MBA and becoming a Fellow of the Association of Certified Accountants.

Lauren’s path into a leader becomes at some point similar to that of Marie, as they both work in a career field monopolised by men and have to work very hard to secure their positions as leaders. During Lauren’s presentation, she clarifies her position about leaders being born and not made, as she was not a born leader, pairing up precisely with the theory of authentic leadership formation about which individuals are not naturally authentic, but they can aim to be authentic through experience (Khan, 2010). The impact role models have on Lauren corroborates the development of authentic leadership as it is her strong conviction that Brian Branson, the man who offered her an accountancy position, possesses leadership traits as he has contributed positively to her life, whilst Greta’s travelling experiences led her to develop communication, confidence, and resilience skills.
