This paper delves into the complexities of Yoruba nationalism and ethnic politics, exploring how Yoruba identity has shaped Nigeria's past and present political landscape. Understanding the dynamics of Yoruba nationalism is crucial for comprehending the broader socio-political dynamics within Nigeria.

Nigeria, with its vast population, abundant natural resources, and diverse ethnic landscape, faces significant challenges in navigating its complex socio-political terrain. The country's ambition to assert itself as a dominant political force is particularly influenced by its three largest ethnic groups: the predominantly Muslim Hausa-Fulani in the north, the predominantly Christian Igbo in the southeast, and the partially Muslim and Christian Yoruba in the southwest. The Yoruba, comprising about 21% of Nigeria's population, are known for their cultural, political, and religious dynamism, with significant presence in states like Oyo, Ogun, Lagos, and beyond.

The Yoruba people, although not a homogeneous group, share a common language, culture, and historical heritage, tracing their origins to the mythological realm of Odua. Historically, the Yoruba have endured challenges such as civil wars, the slave trade, and colonial rule, yet they have remained influential in Nigerian politics and society.

Excerpt from the Book

4.2 Yoruba Politics from 1900 to the 1940s

During the years 1900 to 1940, the idea of having a common ethnicity among the Yoruba groups increased national sentiments. Most of the freed slaves came back to the Sierra Leone, who had the opportunity to gain European education there, they settle back to their hometowns such as Lagos and Egba. Through the establishment of traditional African clergy, eminent persons such as Samuel Johnson, Samuel Ajayi Crowther and Lipede initiated the cultural unity of various Yoruba groups. One of their significant implementations was the translation of the Bible from German and Latin alphabets into the Yoruba language of the Oyo dialect. Most of the clergy were originally from the Kingdom of Oyo, and so they were very familiar with the use of the Oyo dialect in Bible translations. Oyo dialect also was taught in schools for various Yoruba Groups, therefore Oyo Yoruba became the common language among them. Every yoruba group proceed to speak their traditional dialects in their individual communities and vilages, however Oyo dialect could preserved its legal status in educational instututions in South-western Nigeria.

After the 1920s, Yoruba nationalism had been a political rather than a cultural ideology. Some Yoruba leaders; Herbert Macaulay, Ladipo Solanke, Mojola Agbebi, Dr. Kofo Abayomi, Madam Pelewura, Mrs Funmilayo Ransome Kuti, H.O. Davies, A.S. Akinsanya (Awolowo 1947, Nolte 2008) and Nigerian nationalists such as Nnamdi Azikiwe who was the first president of Nigeria, had played a significant role in the Nigerian Youth Movement.
