Excerpt from the Book

4.3 Positive Effects of Humor as a Leadership Tool

After examining what impact leaders have on their followers and how to appeal to different groups in a diverse workplace the foundation for the “right” usage of humor has been set. Therefore, a closer look should be taken at the advantages that humor has as a leadership tool when it is applied in the organization's favor. In general, Romero and Cruthirds (2006) suggest that the two positive humor styles are preferable in an organizational context. In the following subchapter, if not mentioned differently, humor will refer to the positive humor styles.

Humor as a leadership tool can be linked to charismatic leadership (Romero & Pescosolido, 2008). Charismatic leadership is focused on the emotional attachment from followers to their leader, the emotional and motivational stimulation, the strengthening of the connection to the mission, trust in the leader, intrinsic motivation as well as an increased self-esteem of the followers (House & Howell, 1992). Therefore, the follower’s perspective on the leader is important (Conger et al., 2000). Also, the usage of emotions has the potential of positive effects on leadership (Yusof et al., 2014). Additionally, good leadership humor triggers positive emotions in followers (Wijewardena et al., 2017).

An advantage of humor as a leadership tool is that humor is a useful instrument to reduce stress (Romero & Cruthirds, 2006). This can be explained with the transactional theory of stress (see Chapter 3.2) (León-Pérez et al., 2021). The usage of humor leads to a different perception of the stressor and makes it seem more like a challenge than a threat (Kuiper et al., 1993). Consequently, while making a joke about a stressful situation the sincerity of the situation is belittled and it does seem to need fewer resources to combat the stressor (Romero & Cruthirds, 2006; Sliter et al., 2014).
