This paper delves into the integration of digital tools in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms to bolster Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC) among students. Beginning with an overview of ICC in language education, as conceptualized by Michael Byram, the paper navigates through the normalization of digital devices in language teaching and the associated benefits and challenges. Two distinct approaches to utilizing online technologies in EFL lessons are discussed, emphasizing the concept of mediation. The focal point is on Powtoon, an online tool capable of enhancing ICC through various multimedia applications such as video creation, infographic reading, and access to current affairs content via blogs, webinars, and podcasts. Through this exploration, the paper underscores the importance of integrating meaningful intercultural input into language instruction, particularly in an era marked by globalization and digitalization.

Objectives & Core Topics

The primary objective of this research paper is to investigate how digital tools can be integrated into the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom to effectively support and enhance students' Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC). It addresses how modern foreign language teaching can bridge the gap between language acquisition and cultural understanding through technology.

  • The theoretical underpinnings and core components of Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC) as defined by Michael Byram.
  • The evolution and pedagogical impact of computer-assisted language learning (CALL) and digital tools in language education.
  • Opportunities and challenges related to the implementation of digital technologies, such as accessibility, technical barriers, and student motivation.
  • A critical evaluation and functional analysis of the online tool "Powtoon" as a pedagogical instrument for fostering intercultural competence.

Excerpt from the Book

2.3 Analysis of Powtoon in terms of Intercultural Communicative Competence

The website Powtoon functions as a platform to create videos and animations online in order to visualise information and simplify complex concepts. By means of templates, icons and animated images users can easily get to the heart of a message and even portray short stories. Furthermore, Powtoon can be used for teaching purposes, for instance to show explainer videos about difficult topics in class. Likewise, students can create their own short videos and broadcast them via the app and on other channels. Additionally, Powtoon can be applied for business purposes like marketing approaches and internal communication.

With regard to user-friendliness, the online tool is clearly structured and intended to be easy to use for every target group. A registration is necessary to gain access to a test version of Powtoon and after signing in, the creation of projects is possible. The first page covers the ‘workspace’ where users are asked which type of Powtoon they want to create and where they can choose between different templates like explainer videos, marketing videos or simple presentations. Another option allows the generation of blank slides where the user selects a certain look and is able to design most illustrations of the Powtoon individually. The workspace provides manifold options to create slides, choose different fonts, add images and icons and include music in the background. The timing of the overlay of graphics as well as the management of the display of single slides can be adjusted in the timeline at the bottom.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the core subject of this research paper?

The paper examines the intersection of digital technology and foreign language education, specifically evaluating how digital tools can foster students' intercultural communicative competence in the EFL classroom.

What are the central themes discussed in this work?

Key themes include the components of Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC), the normalisation of digital tools in language learning, and the pedagogical shift toward authentic, learner-centered education.

What is the primary research goal?

The goal is to explore, via literature review and critical analysis, how specific digital tools like Powtoon can be integrated into curricula to support students in navigating intercultural encounters effectively.

Which scientific methodology is applied?

The research primarily utilizes a analytical and qualitative approach, combining established educational theories, such as Michael Byram’s ICC model, with a practical evaluation of specific digital platform features.

What topics are covered in the main section?

The main section covers the theoretical framework of ICC, the pedagogical evolution of CALL, the challenges of digital integration, and a specific case study of the Powtoon application.

Which keywords best characterize this research?

The work is characterized by terms such as Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC), EFL classroom, digital tools, learner autonomy, and computer-assisted language learning.

How does Michael Byram’s model influence the study?

Byram’s model provides the structural basis for understanding ICC, specifically his concept of "savoirs," which the author uses as a benchmark to evaluate if digital tools contribute to meaningful intercultural learning.

Is Powtoon recommended as a standalone tool for the EFL classroom?

The author concludes that while Powtoon is an excellent tool for presentation and visualization, it has limitations regarding real-time interaction and should be supplemented by other platforms to fully support intercultural exchange.
