Research Objectives and Core Themes

This academic paper explores the intricate relationship between culture and mental health by comparing the national perspectives of China and Norway. • Theoretical definitions of culture and its influence on individual and societal values.
  • Application of Hofstede’s six cultural dimensions to cross-cultural analysis.
  • Investigation into the specific mental health landscapes in China and Norway.
  • Evaluation of how societal stigmas, development, and government policy shape mental health care.
  • Comparison of cultural dynamics and their impact on coping strategies and systemic support.

Excerpt from the Book

3.1 Mental health in China

China is geographically located on the continent of Asia and is the most populous country in the world with over 1.4 billion inhabitants. In terms of gross domestic product, China is the second largest economy and thus also one of the fastest growing economies in the world. The life expectancy is 75 years for men and 77 years for women (Statista, 2020).

If you look at the Chinese word for mental disorders, it becomes clear what image the language associates with mental health. The word for mentally disturbed behavior is kuang and the typeface is composed of two different characters, a dog and one representing flowering grass. In the broadest sense, this suggests that the Chinese view of mental health problems is equal to the madness of a rabid dog. The Chinese language thus conveys a stigma that mental suffering is like an abnormality (Tseng & Wu, 1985). Moreover, in China, mental illness is rarely talked about, and problems with mental health are hidden, leading to a heavy burden on the individual. A 2019 study in The Lancet shows that more than 16% of the Chinese population suffered from a diagnosable psychiatric disorder in their lifetime, with the majority never receiving treatment.
