Child substance abuse, encompassing the misuse of drugs and harmful substances, poses significant challenges in Kenya, with escalating rates and evolving patterns affecting children's health and well-being. This paper examines the definition and manifestations of child substance abuse, contextualizing it within Kenyan society and legal frameworks such as the Children Act 2022. Drawing on research findings from organizations like NACADA, it explores the prevalence of substance abuse among Kenyan teenagers and its correlation with family environments characterized by illicit drug use. The paper highlights the detrimental effects of child substance abuse on families, communities, and society at large, including breakdowns, criminal activities, and health burdens. It emphasizes the importance of early intervention and protective factors in mitigating the risks associated with child substance abuse, advocating for holistic approaches that address behavioral, emotional, and environmental influences.

Excerpt from the Book

Causes of drug abuse among adolescents

Drug abuse among adolescents has been attributed to the following factors:

Experimental curiosity Children are naturally curious and hence would like to learn as much as they can. To this extent therefore curiosity is good. There have however been cases whereby due to their curiosity they tend to be over explorative. It is this that makes them explore substance abuse. This may result in a situation where they want to experiment with what will happen to them when they consume the drugs. In their curiosity, therefore, their parents should be present to guide them so that they don’t end up indulging in vices.

Peer pressure-the kind of friends our children keep can either make them or break them. That is to say that our children's friends can influence them positively or negatively. More often than not, however, the friends of our children tend to influence them negatively, inculcating in them harmful vices in the process. There is therefore a need to ensure that our children keep good productive friends at all times.

Poor socio-economic conditions at home-it are not any person’s desire to live in a poor condition. Families may however find themselves being in conditions where even accessing the cheapest of meals is a big problem. It is in such instances where to make ends meet children may resolve to use drugs and substance abuse.

Poor role models, parents should set good examples for our children to follow. Recent events however paint a turn of events whereby it is the parents who are inculcating vices in their children. They have failed to show good examples to their children and have failed to direct their children along the right paths.
