The interest in knowing family traditions is usually a desire that comes to us at a later stage of our lives. In youth we are looking for the future. At the dawn of our lives, we direct all of our efforts to build a career, a family and a heritage. In fact, a legacy. But as the years went on, we eventually began to look back and try to understand the past to be able to answer a very simple question: How did we get here? And when we think in terms of legacy, we certainly try to fit it into a bigger picture. It's like a relay race, in which we'll try to pass a stick. It would not be for another reason that usually comes from our grandparents the initiative to transmit to the grandchildren the stories and "tales" of our ancestors.
Rescuing the family tradition is not a complex task when carried out at the right time, while the memory is still alive. Trying to do the same without a thread of the skein, this is an impossible task. Gathering the available data and finding the beginning of the “trail of the past”, sweat and a good project are able to do the rest. These days, we have powerful allies in technology and internet.
We hope that everyone appreciates the result of this project, produced under a collective effort that motivated us a lot. May he achieve his main goals: to honor the memory of our ancestors, to bring his legacy to the knowledge of new generations and to strengthen family ties.

Excerpt from the book
1.2 Remote origins of the branch “Silvino”
In the same way as the surname Hardy, Silvino initially constituted a masculine name, originating from the Latin word “Silva”, which literally means “jungle” or “forest”. Thus, from this etymological root, Silvino can be interpreted as “the one who belongs to the jungle” or “the one who came from the jungle”.
Despite the existence of this hereditary surname in Portugal, and even in Italy, the Silvino branch of our family has its most remote geographical origin linked to the region called "Zona da Mata" (Zone of the Forests) of the state of Minas Gerais, particularly the current municipality of “Viçosa”, which before its emancipation was designated as the village of "Santa Rita do Turvo". The jungle environment was very characteristic of the original Atlantic Forest which existed in this area. So, the nickname Silvino was quite appropriate for the members of the family branch who chose to settle over there.
The region of “Viçosa” was inhabited by the Puris Indians, members of the linguistic trunk “Jê”. This is a distinct trunk of the "Tupi-Guarani" that mostly inhabited the Brazilian coast when the arrival of the first Portuguese expeditions that landed in South America. The Indians who occupied the "sertões" (Wild Regions), and those like the Puris which spoke other languages, were designated by the Tupis-Guaranis as "Tapuias", a term whose literal meaning meant " enemies”.
This situation of adversity among the original inhabitants of Brazil was eventually transferred to the Portuguese colonizers, who fought and enslaved them as they advanced inland. In this sense, the Puris ended up being characterized as being "brave Indians", particularly for not accepting their catechization, the imposition of village regimes and the loss of their traditional lands, which would have led this group to be practically extinct over the years (Figure 2).
