2.1. Culture Wars and the Feminist Porn Wars
In American usage, the term culture wars implies “ideologically charged battles over opposing moral values and fundamental belief systems” (Darts 104) that stretch across almost every aspect of American society. In 1991, James Davison Hunter redefined the term culture wars as a cultural and political polarizing divide over defining issues like abortion, homosexuality or censorship (104). The culture wars are fought between two polarized groups, between the orthodox and the progressives (104).
The field of sexuality and pornography did not remain excluded from the culture wars. For at least 50 years, Pornography has been causing conflicts in the feminist movement (Stewart 254). In the 1980s, however, pornography became the feminist issue and the feminist porn wars emerged in the United States as an interfeminist culture war (Segal 47). The issue of pornography became “bitterly divisive” among feminists (Chancer 79). “What the two poles of feminist discussion in the (...) sexuality debate divide over most fundamentally is whether sexual pleasure liberates women” (Ferguson “Pleasure, Power and the Porn Wars” 11) or represses women.
