Various aspects of democracy are discussed and the influence of the former president is highlighted. Despite this, various anti-democratic aspects of Mr. Trump are also discussed, but the focus is deliberately on the arguments that speak for a positive influence on democracy. Despite this, there should be no one-sided whitewashing.

Many have referred to Donald Trump's 2016 presidential victory as one of the greatest upsets in the political history of the United States. The so-called "Clinton political machine" was defeated by a billionaire real estate tycoon with as much political experience as I have. One of his most crucial "trump cards," if you will, was that he consistently reminded his supporters that opposing political correctness was one of his core beliefs, which was crucial to his standing as an "outsider" and "maverick." Of course, this was no coincidence; multiple surveys conducted in 2015 revealed that a significant number of Americans thought political correctness was a major issue. To an example, a poll from Farleigh Dickinson University found that 68 percent of Americans believed that Political Correctness is a “big problem” in society and 59 percent of Americans felt that “too many people are easily offended these days over the language others use” (Esposito 3). Numerous surveys supported this theory, and one even said that the choice of whether or not political correctness was an issue was “the most reliable predictor of whether or not voters intended to support Trump”. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that a political outsider with little experience won the presidency by rejecting key conventions of political language during his campaign—a point I shall address in more detail later.
