This lesson plan for 7th grade Irish History aims to create an engaging and motivating learning environment through interactive methods and materials. It focuses on practicing oral and reading skills, starting with a warm-up where students discuss everyday topics to activate their language skills. The lesson progresses through cooperative reading comprehension and research, culminating in a presentation phase where students share their findings, enhancing their speaking and presentation skills. Intended as the third or fourth lesson in a sequence, it builds on a general introductory lesson about Ireland, providing students with the background necessary for independent research on the country. The lesson promotes group work to help 7th graders develop a sense of community, crucial as they are in a transitional phase from childhood to adolescence. The warm-up involves a milling activity where students move around, physically engaging and connecting with classmates by discussing their week or weekend, fostering a communicative and lively class atmosphere.

Emphasizing intercultural competence, the lesson introduces students to new cultures and countries, aligning with the 7th-grade curriculum where Ireland is often taught. Students can choose from various historic events based on their interests, making the lesson adaptable to diverse classes. To ensure a lively and communicative class, active participation in discussions is encouraged, but if the class is less lively, the presentation phase can be adapted into a writing task. The classroom should be equipped with computers or laptops for research, or students can bring their own devices, ensuring productivity. Mobile phones are prohibited for research purposes. A whiteboard or beamer is recommended for the presentation phase, where students will create and present digital presentations of their chosen historic events.

3. Lesson Plan

The lead-in phase is intended to introduce the students to the topic and create an initial point of contact that is as low-threshold as possible. As a lead-in I chose the Silent Impulse. The aim of this is to get the students and the teacher talking about this impulse after a short time. Individual pictures of historical events in Ireland are shown without comment including pictures of The Act of Union, The Great Famine, The Titanic, The EEC/EU, The Belfast Agreement, and Dublin Docklands (see Appendix A). The students are given thirty seconds to a minute to memorize the images and gather their impressions.

The impulse is then ended, and the pupils present what they can remember and what expectations this raises for them. The teacher is reluctant to give assessments; this is also about fluency. Clear mistakes in pronunciation or grammar will be corrected if they have already been dealt with in class before. However, this is clearly about the students' impressions and thoughts and not about the correctness of these assumptions. Overcorrection could lead to weaker students not daring to say anything. Correction should therefore be handled with care in this phase as accuracy is not the main goal. Differentiation can be used at different levels: for example, chains of association can be created by thinking about what the person before said, or previous knowledge can be reactivated. No student comments the ideas and thought of the other so there is no judging involved. Everyone only says what comes to their own mind. If problems arise here, the teacher can write key questions or keywords on the board to guide the students. The discussion could also take place in pairs if the students do not feel confident enough to express their thoughts in front of the whole class at the beginning.
