This paper delves into the cultural and geological heritage of Sindh, a province in Pakistan with a history that traces back to the Mohenjo-Daro civilization in 2500 BC. Sindh’s rich cultural tapestry is woven from influences of immigrants from northern India, Gujarat, Punjab, Arab countries, and Baluchistan. The province, with an area of 47,569 square miles, is bordered by Bhawalpur in the north, the Arabian Sea in the south, the Hallar range in the east, and a sandy desert in the west. Geologically, Sindh’s landscape has been shaped by significant epochs, with the Indus River playing a pivotal role long before the Himalayas' formation. This study highlights the importance of Sindh in both national and international heritage protection strategies due to its unique historical and natural resources. The enduring silhouette of Sindh, marked by the ancient Indus River, reflects its significance in the timeline of human civilization.

Excerpt from the Book

Geographical Subdivisions of Sindh

Sindh is divided into five parts from a physical point of view: Siro (North), Vicholo (central), Laar (Southern Coast), Kohistan (mountainous), and Thar. (Desert) .9 The Sindh River tides through Siro, Vicholo, and Laar. The growth of several empires and civilizations in this area happened, and fierce wars took place; they lost and were won. Kohistan is a hilly area, and Thar is a sandy zone, which is part of the large desert ranging to Rajasthan and Kutch. There are lakes and pond in hilly areas, whereas sandy areas rely entirely on small amounts of rain. If it rains, all the flora in the desert will bloom, and people will be full of mouths, or else they will starve to death! (Vase Ta Thar, Na ta bar). Even in this desert, there are important places such as Chachro, Mithi, Diplo, Nangar Parkar, Umerkot, and Khapro.10

The Sindhi’s rose from the sea to land in the Tertiary Period. Archaeologists have found the oldest fossils near Sehwan. Professionals believe that Sehwan is the hometown of the oldest civilization. These fossils were revealed in a small hill near Sehwan in 1922. Lake Manchar is nearby, and it is speculated that the lake in ancient times had contact with Sehwan. Today’s Santhals, Bhils, and Maands originated from the early native peoples of Sindh.11
