Excerpt from the Book

2.3 Muhammad Ali vs. the United States

During Ali´s fight with Liston, it already seems like the atmosphere in America becomes more tense: There is John Kennedy´s assassination, black population on their way to assert itself and the start of America´s military rearmament in Vietnam. With the Vietnam war raging, additional conflicts between Ali and the white establishment developed which culminated in a fight between Ali and the United States since he was supposed to join the army. However, he refused to and requested exemption from the draft many times so that, on August 23, 1966, Ali had to appear at a hearing in which he wanted to convince the officer Lawrance Graumann not to join the army.

He substantiated his please by citing the financial hardship his family would suffer if he was inducted on the one hand and his religious beliefs on the other hand. By handing in a 21-page letter in which justifies his please with arguments such as “How can I kill someone when I pray five times a day for peace?” (Hauser, p.155) or “I ain´t got no quarrel with them Vietcong” (Hauser, p.145) Ali aims to demonstrate his sincerity regarding the objection which, however, did not change anything to the fact that his objection was denied (cf. Hauser. pp.144-160).
