Digital printing is a new dimension in textile printing. Compared to conventional methods there
are many strengths, but also weaknesses. As far as the design process is concerned, the digital
technology has an impact, to some extent being able to produce small, highly individual patterns,
at a lower price and with a lower lead time than traditionally. These facts also positively support
the trend of mass customization. Currently some designers embrace the new technology but at
the same time it is also criticised.

3.1 Technology
Unlike conventional textile printing, methods that apply ink through a contact medium such as screens or rollers, the digital textile printing technology uses the contactless ink jet method. The ink jet technology arose from the paper printing industry. Within the textile industry it was firstly relevant for printing on carpets in the 70's. In this way any computer rendered image can be directly printed onto woven fabric. The current developments are able to print on any kind of fibre and also fibre blends.
Depending on which print head is being used there are two methods being classified in the Ink jet printing technology for textiles.
The drop on demand (DOD) technique only pushes ink drops out of the printer head when it is actually applied on the fabric. For each pixel of the electronic picture that is going to be printed there are two states: either an ink drop is generated or not. Within the category DOD there are three different methods, the electrostatic, the piezoelectric and the thermal method defining how the ink drop is formed when leaving the ink jet head.
Alternatively, the continuous ink jet (CIJ) technique functions with the help of a steady force pushing ink out of the printer head at a steady speed. Compared to the DOD method ink consumption is higher but production speed can be increased and higher resolution is possible than with the DOD method.
