This paper examines the 1986 British comedy Playing Away, directed by Horace Ové, as a cinematic exploration of both cultural and racial dynamics and gender roles in 1980s Britain. Playing Away emerges as a product of a reactionary period, reflecting the social realities faced by Black British communities while also challenging traditional portrayals of gender. The central narrative, focused on a cricket match between a West Indian team from Brixton and the residents of a fictional English village, subtly addresses the cultural tensions and misunderstandings between these groups. This study specifically investigates how gender roles are portrayed within the film, contrasting it with mainstream cinema of the time, which often reinforced stereotypes. By situating Playing Away within the historical context of Brixton and the Black British experience, this paper highlights the film's significance in challenging and reshaping both cinematic and societal narratives related to race and gender.

Excerpt from the Book

5.1.2 Cinematographic Elements

The classic male stereotype can be seen in some parts of the film. On the one hand, we have Willy Boy as the male protagonist of the film. His conversation with Robbo, in which they consume whiskey and talk about their problems in a way that was common for the male image of the time, reveals that he has travelled from the Caribbean to provide for his family (Phillips 17). He is also a father figure who holds his family together, in the sense of the classic family image, by protecting his daughter from Errol and even risking a physical confrontation to do so (Phillips 15). In this scene, for example, he says to Errol: "When I talking to you have some respect. And I want to know why you let my girl come in such a place on her own? " (Phillips 15). Willy Boy is also the hub of the entire Conquistador team, as can be clearly seen from the bus scene at the beginning of the film (Phillips 20f), where he tries to entice the whole team to take a photo together, but as this fails for the time being, he exclaims loudly: "What the hell kind of team spirit is this?" (Phillips 21) to express a serious fatherly tone. Robbo also adapts to the old role model of the man by showing the same motives for entering a new country as Willy Boy, as can be seen in the same dialogue as mentioned above (Phillips 17). Here he mentions the difficulty of his decision: " But when, [...] I was twenty-three when I make the biggest decision of my life as to wether to cross the Atlantic and put a whole new perspective on my future." (Phillips 17).
