Excerpt from the Book

The style of the portraiture of the effects of colonialism in the book

The various elements are stylistically explicated in the play, “Sizwe Banzi is Dead” by Athol Fugard. One of those ways is through the title of the book. This demonstrates vividly what the blacks went through in south Africa, during the days of apartheid. Sizwe abandons his name in place of another identity in order to be able to earn a living for his family. He robs the dead man of his identity (passbook) and entitles himself all that he requires to live in Port Elizabeth. He becomes a ghost of himself, announcing his own ‘death’ and ‘resurrection’ as Robert Zwelinzima (Fugard,1972).

According to Khaya. M, & Bello. S.G (2018) Symbolism is another style Athol Fugard use to portray the plight of the South African blacks. The character Styles faces the problem of the infestation of cockroaches when he first acquired his studio. He has to disinfect them before he is able to use the shop. The cockroaches symbolize the white capitalist. Without the extermination of the cockroaches effectively, his usage of the studio will be impossible. He speaks about them in a language or tone of warfare. The cockroaches are seen as paratroopers who are ready for battle, while Styles is armed with pesticides to battle against the cockroaches, whites (Dlamini. S et al (2020).
