Auszug aus dem Buch
3.1 Material Suppliers (Local Hong Kong vs. Global Sourcing)
Nike's sourcing practices emphasize cost-efficiency, access to specialized materials, and responsiveness to market demand. This global strategy has forced the company to source mostly from Vietnam, Indonesia, and China rather than locally from Hong Kong suppliers. These regions, which have become strategic production centres for footwear, provide a competitive advantage in terms of labour costs, and They are also reputed for their established strength in the manufacture of materials that go into creating Nike's products – synthetic fibres, rubber and leather (International Labour Organization (Kucera, 2020). Succeeding decades have witnessed a gradual relocation of high-volume, low-cost shoe production to these areas due to flexibility, reduced labour cost and improved shoe production skills, among other factors (World Bank, 2021).
Nike's FY2021 report shows that footwear manufacturing is spread across Vietnam with a distribution of about 51%, while Indonesia and mainland China also contribute to the manufacturing. This is in line with the global tendency whereby in 1987, developing countries accounted for 61.4% of the world's production of footwear (e Sá, 2021). Hong Kong, though, has a more limited but complementary function in Nike's system. Although it is not a major source of resources, its geographical advantage and efficient transport system allow Nike to organize this region's inventory distribution and goods delivery in the event of a shift in demand (World Bank, 2021). This positioning is similar to most other international footwear firms that use the city as a distribution platform where they benefit from the efficiency of supply chains rather than local sources of materials.
