Temu is a subsidiary of PDD Holdings which has swiftly risen in the global e-commerce industry since its 2022 launch. Based on an unconventional marketplace approach and affordable prices, Temu enables buyers across the globe to access manufacturers, particularly from China, within a wide range of categories. This strategy put it as a strong competitor against other market leaders such as amazon and Alibaba. Currently, the global e-commerce market exceeds $5 trillion in 2023 with increased competition, technological advancement, and changes in consumer behavior (Nikkei Asia, 2023). External factors like economic conditions, technological innovations, and changes in laws or governance affect the profitability of the industry. For the organization to continue to grow and gain a competitive advantage, Temu needs to assess its external environment systematically. This report includes Porter’s Five Forces industry analysis, competitive analysis, a partial SWOT analysis and also the External Factor Evaluation (EFE) matrix analysis for Temu and its industry, which gives strategic recommendation in order to improve its competitiveness and profitability in the market.

Industry Analysis: Porter's Five Forces Analysis of the Global E-commerce Industry and Temu: This chapter undertakes a detailed examination of the global e-commerce industry through the lens of Porter's Five Forces. It analyzes the threat of new entrants, finding it moderate due to low regulation but high capital investment requirements. The bargaining power of suppliers is assessed as relatively weak due to the dispersed nature of suppliers, especially in China, and Temu's direct-to-consumer model. The bargaining power of buyers is deemed strong due to readily available alternatives and low switching costs, forcing platforms to compete on price and service. The threat of substitutes, including physical stores and social shopping, is analyzed as weak to moderate, with e-commerce maintaining a competitive advantage due to convenience and price. Finally, the intense rivalry among established players like Amazon and Alibaba, and new entrants like Temu, is highlighted, emphasizing the need for differentiation and efficiency to maintain profitability.

Competitive Analysis: Competitors of Temu and Competitive Product and Service Analysis: This section delves into a comparative analysis of Temu against its major competitors, including Amazon, Alibaba, and eBay. It highlights the common ground of offering diverse products and services and employing technology to reach a global customer base. However, it also emphasizes Temu's unique cost leadership and direct-to-consumer model, contrasting it with Amazon's focus on convenience and logistics, Alibaba's extensive network, and eBay's auction-based platform.
