This study aims to do its part to rescue the peasant women from oblivion and neglect, thus becoming the forgotten protagonists for much of medieval historiography. We must not forget that these women were by far the largest percentage of the female population in medieval times. This fact should not be surprising if one considers that in this period the rural world was predominant, and wealth and social status were closely linked to agricultural production to a greater or lesser extent. On the other hand, another point of interest of this monograph is to conduct a comparative study which sheds some light on the differences and similarities in the situation of peasant women in two seigneurial systems that at first glance seem unrelated. Still, once they are analysed carefully, and, despite their geographical distance, both can be seen as a common influence in the daily lives of rural women when it comes to their private and public spheres.

Objectives and Topics

This study aims to provide a comparative analysis of medieval peasant women in the English manorial system and the foral system of north-western Iberia, highlighting their status, importance, and agency within these distinct seigneurial frameworks.

  • Comparative analysis of seigneurial systems (manorial England vs. foral Iberia)
  • The social and economic status of peasant women in public and private spheres
  • The impact of seigneurial authorities on marriage, sexuality, and daily labor
  • The role of peasant women as legal and economic agents in land transactions
  • Historiographical investigation into the role of rural women in the medieval economy

Excerpt from the Book

3.1. Marriage and Merchet

Thus, throughout Europe, it was usual to consider marriage as a source of cash designed to increase the overlords' assets rather than a mere social institution defined by its privacy. The point was that marriage, on occasions, could undermine the working power of the manor, especially, if the peasant woman married an inappropriate man, that is, one who did not share her vassal status or if this marriage took place outside the domain of the lord. The lord had to avoid this and ensure that the newlywed husband participated in the work on the land and in the payment of the seigneurial rent. Therefore, the lords, at the prospect of a likely reduction of income, decided to mend the situation by imposing levies on their vassals.

These types of economic burdens were known by different names depending on the countries or regions: Merchet in England, Huesas in Castile, or Firma de Spoli in Catalonia, but all of them shared a common feature: the peasant was forced to ask the lord's permission for him or his daughter to be able to get married, for which a fine had to be paid. In France an institution called formariage was erected. It is characterized by being a fee to be paid at the time the marriage takes place outside the manor of the lord.
