This qualitative research proposal examines leadership styles/behaviors and their impact on employee work motivation and productivity under the new world order of work from home. Due to the shift in the work environment, it is imperative to understand how different leadership types, including transformational, transactional, and laissez-faire, affect the motivation of the employees. Therefore, the study's research questions are: How do the identified leadership styles affect employees' experience, particularly regarding motivation? This research will use semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis to identify employees' insights about leadership and motivation within a virtual work environment. The self-selection of participants, together with the use of qualitative research, will capture the experiences and environment of individuals, which will help in efficient strategies for leaders of remote teams. The study will be useful for developing the topic of organizational behavior and for giving useful tips to leaders and managers in virtual working environments.

Research Objectives and Key Topics

This study aims to examine the impact of various leadership styles—specifically transformational, transactional, and laissez-faire—on employee motivation within the context of remote work environments, addressing the gap in understanding leadership dynamics when face-to-face interaction is absent.

  • Impact of leadership styles on remote employee motivation
  • Differences between transformational, transactional, and laissez-faire approaches in virtual settings
  • Challenges of maintaining employee commitment without physical presence
  • Utilization of qualitative methods to capture individual experiences in telework
  • Development of effective leadership strategies for remote teams

Excerpt from the Book

1.1 Background and Motivation

Working during a coronavirus pandemic has revolutionized the global outlook of work centers, and Working from Home has both positives and negatives. Leadership, primarily grounded on first-level interaction, has felt the heat and switched to virtual settings where direct control is almost nonexistent and new kinds of communication have emerged. Teleworking has unique leadership concerns for managers who must maintain employees' productivity despite the geographic distance because the setup may cause disconnection from others and boredom (Fay & Kline, 2011).

It has been argued that motivation is critical in organizations in terms of productivity and employees 'commitment (Herzberg, 1968). In traditional settings, leaders play a significant role in shaping motivation through direct interaction, immediate feedback, and physical presence. However, the virtual context of remote work changes how leaders interact with employees, necessitating adjustments to leadership strategies (Bailey & Kurland, 2002). Leadership styles are essential as they define how leaders communicate, inspire, and engage with their teams, particularly in virtual environments where a lack of physical presence requires alternative motivational approaches.

In this context, transformational leadership, which emphasizes vision, inspiration, and empowerment, may offer a sense of purpose that helps to engage employees virtually. In contrast, transactional leadership, which focuses on reward-based motivation, might struggle in a remote setting where immediate oversight is challenging. Laissez-faire leadership, allowing high autonomy, could empower or disengage employees based on their personal motivation and discipline levels. This study focuses on these three leadership styles to explore how each impacts employee motivation in remote work settings.
