Excerpt from the Book
1.1.1 Demographics of the Workforce
Currently there are six generations in the workplace, from the hardworking octogenarians of the Silent Generation (generation before ‘45), many of whom are still active in major leadership roles around the world, to the teens of Generation Alpha who are working on summer jobs and high school internships. In the figure below the number of people of each generation in Germany (in millions) can be found. The largest population consists of Gen X residents with 16,68M, closely followed by Gen Y with 16.45M residents. Furthermore, Gen Z and Baby Boomers have approximately the same population of 12M residents in Germany. (Statista, 2024)
Furthermore, the employment rate of those aged 55 to 64 in Germany rose significantly over ten years, from 62% in 2012 to nearly 72% in 2021, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) based on the microcensus, the European Labour Force Survey, and Eurostat data (Destatis Statistisches Bundesamt, 2023). This indicates that older generations remain in the workforce longer, raising the average working age within companies. For example, BMW, the German automaker, faced a projected increase in the average age of its plant workers from 39 to 47 by 2017, which posed a challenge to the company’s strategy of enhancing competitiveness through technological leadership and productivity improvements. (Loch, et al., 2010)
