Burning (버닝) released in 2018, is a Korean psychological thriller, co-written, produced, and directed by director Lee Chang-dong. The drama is an alteration of a short story titled “Barn Burning” written by Haruki Murakami. Lee Chang-dong re-contextualizes the piece to exhibit an exclusive narrative of economic inequality, loneliness, and other hardships of an entire generation of young Koreans in recent years, through the eyes of protagonist Lee Jong-su, a working-class young man from Paju, South Korea. By submitting an overview to the story, this paper includes a summary of the plot with emphasis on the life of Lee Jung-So. In the latter part the essay will take a closer look at the important motifs Burning highlights, mainly focusing on the theme of the pervasive feeling of loneliness, not unusual for adolescents in today’s world.

Excerpt from the Book

Analysis of Loneliness and Societal Issues

Lee Chang-dong’s Burning does an exceptionally great job capturing various important motifs surrounding current Korean societal issues, especially amongst young adults in their 20’s and early 30’s. One of the most clearly identified characteristics of Burning is the omnipresent topic of loneliness, not uncommon for young Koreans in today’s world. All three protagonists experience said issue, however the way it is expressed varies.

Director Lee Chang-dong strives to communicate the sense of loneliness and isolation of our protagonist Jong-su. The young writer is withdrawn from urban society and is collapsing under the pressure of living on the outskirts of Seoul. He is left with no friends, family or coworkers. His phone rings but there is no one on the other end of the line. Jong-su is surrounded by communicative and informative objects created by humans, like a phone, television and laptop, but he is mostly alone without any individuals to accompany him.

He struggles to communicate with people and is caught in a trap, seemingly unable to alter his circumstances. A great scene putting emphasis on this is when Jong-su waits to apply for a part-time job alongside others his age. Instead of interacting with one another they are all glued to their phones, not making any efforts of bonding and gaining some new friends. Another scene in which this theme of isolation and loneliness becomes particularly remarkable is when Jong-su’s mother, who abandoned the family when the young man was still a child, returns only to request financial support from her unemployed son. She doesn’t pay closer attention to him, seems absent from the conversation and her eyes are stuck to her phone screen. Both of these passages in the film create a strong connection to a hardship many young Koreans experience, in a society where social groups are remarkably important to identity.
