This action research aimed to eradicate the problem on non-readers and struggling readers to achieve an increase of their performance and mastery levels. The increase would only be achieved once the remediation through innovation would be conducted after the pre-test result of Phil-IRI.
Proficiency in phonology of a teacher teaching reading catapults the immediate solution on student’s frustration level reading skill. Not all teachers are proficient in choosing the appropriate methods and strategy to unfold the ignorance/illiteracy of a child during his formative years how to let him/her learn to read. Moreover, the best choice of some teachers to teach preschoolers, grades 1 to 3 pupils should be certainly an expert in phonology as it is the most efficient and effective means of conducting teaching-learning process on their daily interactions so that their illiteracy would be transformed to literacy.
Interpretive / descriptive research design was necessary in this action research. Such design required the researcher to utilize both the quantitative and qualitative methods. Moreover, he had conducted a Descriptive Survey in order to gather both the primary and the secondary data. These data proved that proficiency in phonology of a teacher who is teaching beginning readers would resolve the intriguing issue (on non-readers and struggling readers) prevalent in this country at present.

Objectives and Key Themes

This action research aimed to improve the reading skills of Grade 7 students at Prieto-Diaz National High School who were struggling readers or non-readers. The primary objective was to increase their reading performance and mastery levels through remediation using innovative methods. The research explored the effectiveness of Fuller's Method and Strategic Intervention Materials (SIM) in achieving this goal.

  • The impact of teacher proficiency in phonology on student reading skills.
  • Effectiveness of Fuller's Method in teaching reading.
  • The role of Strategic Intervention Materials (SIM) in improving reading comprehension.
  • The improvement of reading levels from frustration to instructional or independent levels.
  • The development and implementation of effective remedial reading strategies.

Chapter Summaries

Abstract: This action research aimed to address the issue of non-readers and struggling readers in Grade 7, aiming to improve their reading performance through remediation. A pre-test using the Phil-IRI revealed a significant number of students at the frustration level. The study employed an interpretive/descriptive research design, utilizing both quantitative and qualitative methods. The results showed a positive impact of Fuller's Method and SIM on reading comprehension levels, with a notable increase in students achieving instructional and independent reading levels after the intervention. Recommendations for future implementation included further SIM development, parental and teacher monitoring of student progress, and the wider adoption of Fuller's Method and SIM.

Context and Rationale: The research addresses the significant problem of struggling readers in Grade 7 at Prieto-Diaz National High School. Many students were identified as being at the frustration reading level using the Phil-IRI assessment. The research explores potential causes for this, including weak foundational reading skills developed in earlier years and insufficient parental support. The study emphasizes the importance of addressing this issue not only to improve individual student performance but also the overall academic standing of the school. The failure of students to acquire sufficient reading skills negatively impacts their ability to succeed across all subjects.

Innovation, Intervention and Strategy: This chapter details the innovative strategies employed in the action research. The researcher developed Strategic Intervention Materials (SIM) specifically tailored to the needs of struggling readers. These materials incorporated Fuller's Method, which combines alphabet, phonics, and whole methods of word recognition. The approach involved explicit instruction of letter sounds, blending, and building words, following a research-based, structured literacy approach. The SIMs aimed to provide targeted support and practice opportunities for students.

Action Research Questions: This section outlines the central question guiding the research: How can a teacher effectively address the reading challenges of students at the frustration level? This overarching question is broken down into more specific questions, focusing on assessing the students' initial reading levels using the Phil-IRI and evaluating the effectiveness of the implemented interventions (Fuller's Method and SIM) in improving those levels. The primary aim is to find practical and effective strategies for improving reading comprehension among struggling readers.

Frequently Asked Questions about Action Research on Reading Skills

What is the main goal of the action research described in this document?

The primary objective of this action research is to improve the reading skills of Grade 7 students at Prieto-Diaz National High School who are struggling readers or non-readers. It aims to increase their reading performance and mastery levels through remediation using innovative methods.

What methods were used in this action research?

The research explored the effectiveness of Fuller's Method and Strategic Intervention Materials (SIM) in improving reading skills. Fuller's Method combines alphabet, phonics, and whole methods of word recognition. The SIMs were specifically tailored to the needs of struggling readers and provided targeted support and practice opportunities.

What is Fuller's Method, and how was it used?

Fuller's Method combines alphabet, phonics, and whole methods of word recognition. In this research, it was incorporated into the Strategic Intervention Materials (SIM) and involved explicit instruction of letter sounds, blending, and building words, following a structured literacy approach.

What are Strategic Intervention Materials (SIM), and what was their role?

Strategic Intervention Materials (SIM) are specifically designed materials to help students improve their reading skills. In this research, they provided targeted support and practice opportunities, incorporating Fuller's Method to help struggling readers.

How were students assessed at the beginning of the research?

Students were assessed using the Phil-IRI (Philippine Informal Reading Inventory) to determine their initial reading levels. This pre-test revealed a significant number of students were at the frustration level.

What were the results of the action research?

The results showed a positive impact of Fuller's Method and SIM on reading comprehension levels, with a notable increase in students achieving instructional and independent reading levels after the intervention.

What are some recommendations for future implementation based on this research?

The recommendations include further SIM development, parental and teacher monitoring of student progress, and the wider adoption of Fuller's Method and SIM.

What is the research design used in this action research?

The study employed an interpretive/descriptive research design, utilizing both quantitative and qualitative methods.

What were the initial reading levels of the students?

Many students were identified as being at the frustration reading level using the Phil-IRI assessment at the beginning of the research.

What is the key research question guiding the action research?

The central question is: How can a teacher effectively address the reading challenges of students at the frustration level? This question explores practical and effective strategies for improving reading comprehension among struggling readers.
