The concept of environmental auditing has evolved to address issues wider than simple commitment to legal compliance, for example, identifying improvements and opportunities for cost savings, and confirming the effectiveness of environmental management systems. It is equally essential to note that environmental auditing can produce a range of benefits for an organisation, including cost savings and increased management effectiveness and both large and small organisations can benefit from undertaking an audit.

Objectives and Themes

This paper examines the fundamental role of environmental auditing as a crucial management tool for ensuring sustainable development. It explores how systematic evaluations of ongoing projects help organizations maintain legal compliance, improve operational efficiency, and mitigate environmental risks, while providing a framework for integrating these audits into standard project management practices.

  • Evolution and definition of environmental auditing.
  • Regulatory frameworks and legal requirements for environmental audits.
  • Categorization of audit types (Compliance/Control vs. Self/System).
  • Strategic benefits of audits for waste, energy, water, and quality management.
  • Integration of auditing results into project planning and internal management.

Excerpt from the Book

MAINSTREAMING ENVIRONMENTAL AUDITING IN PROJECT MANAGEMENT

So as to effectively manage a given development project, the project management team must be fully conscious of every aspect of the project’s operational procedures and processes. An environmental audit should be undertaken to reveal any weaknesses such as the structures so that they may be rectified before causing any damage to the environment.

An environmental audit can enable the project management personnel to become aware of many environmental issues of which they formerly may have been less well informed. This is especially the case of organizations with multiple facilities or with large manufacturing operations, where the senior managers and directors are often located at a distance mostly at head offices. Managers may not have visited many of the sites where there are obvious environmental risks and, even if they have, they may not have the appropriate knowledge or training to identify that risks are present. The use of environmental audits can provide management with the confidence that any actual or potential risks have been identified.

Within project management, an environmental audit should be used to identify opportunities for improvements in an organization’s management, often leading to savings in spending. This is particularly common in the case of issue audits, such as the water or waste audit. For instance, waste minimization is an area in possession of vast opportunities for an organization to save money. Waste requires to be disposed of, and this itself costs money. Organizations are usually charged for disposing of waste into licensed landfill facilities, or pay for special treatment of a chemical before disposal. Adopting a more efficient process could mean that fewer raw materials and a reduction in waste treatment cost.

Summary of Chapters

1. Introduction: This chapter defines the scope of an environmental audit study as a systematic assessment of project activities to ensure conformity with environmental management plans and provides an overview of its historical development in industrialized countries.

2. Importance of Environmental Auditing in Sustainable Environmental Management: This section explores how audits serve as a tool for generating information on organizational performance, focusing on areas like waste, water, and energy efficiency, and discusses how they support continuous improvement.

3. Mainstreaming Environmental Auditing in Project Management: This chapter details the practical application of audits within the project cycle, highlighting how they foster management awareness and facilitate cost-saving opportunities through resource efficiency and proactive risk mitigation.

4. Conclusion: The summary notes that despite the essential nature of environmental auditing for sustainability, its wider application remains limited due to competing economic pressures, and emphasizes that an audit functions as a diagnostic snapshot rather than a replacement for overall management systems.

The primary purpose is to provide a systematic, periodic, and objective evaluation of an organization's operations to determine their conformity with established environmental management plans and regulatory standards.

Which key thematic areas are addressed in this paper?

The paper covers the historical evolution of environmental auditing, the regulatory environment in Kenya, specific types of resource auditing (waste, water, energy), and the integration of audit insights into project management.

What is the primary goal of the research?

The goal is to discuss why environmental auditing is vital for sustainable management and how project managers can use this tool to optimize operational practices and ensure environmental protection.

Which scientific or regulatory approach is used?

The study utilizes a regulatory and management-oriented approach, referencing the Environmental Management and Coordination Act (EMCA) 1999 and the established procedures for Environmental Impact Assessments.

What is the focus of the main section regarding project management?
