The goal of this paper is to find out if and why greenwashing is a curse for society, what the difference to sustainability is, how companies like Nike are involved and how they are dealing with it.

In the first chapter this seminar paper is dedicated to the basics and will answer the following questions: What does greenwashing and what does sustainability mean? What are the different forms and characteristics of greenwashing? Is greenwashing and sustainability the same thing and if not, what are the differences?

So here follows the classification and explanation of the term’s sustainability and greenwashing as well as their distinction from each other.
The second chapter deals exclusively with the Nike brand. Here the corporate philosophy is explained, and the sustainability strategy is shown. This is underpinned by practical examples.
The third chapter deals with the consequences and effects of greenwashing. It explains what the sins of greenwashing are and whether and how it affects today's society. Again a few examples are listed to provide practical relevance and to make it clear that it affects the entire society.
How to reduce and recognize greenwashing are the subjects of chapter four. Additional solutions are sought here to avoid greenwashing.
After that there will come a summary and a conclusion of the whole seminar paper.

Excerpt from the Book

1. Introduction

With Corona over and the Ukraine war seeing no end, there is a central theme that everyone faces on a daily basis: Saving.

Especially before and in the winter of 2022 according to the federal government people were told to heat sparingly.

Obviously, companies are taking advantage of this in their advertising efforts. They now advertise not only with "organic" and "sustainable", but also with the fact that energy, electricity, or water could be saved in their product manufacture.

The world-wide climate crisis makes mankind rethink. We can no longer afford to live without consideration for losses. Society is becoming more concerned about the impact of the climate crisis, so people are trying to look for sustainable products and buy or do things that help the environment.

Sustainability and frugality are now more important than ever, but this brings with it a questionable method: Greenwashing.
