This paper aims to analyse the metaphors employed in Donald Trump's rally speeches as well as the question whether or not Trump deliberately makes use of said metaphors.
In modern politics, few people have captured public attention and stirred controversy quite like Donald Trump. His ascent to the presidency of the United States in 2016 and his continued influence on American politics have been marked by a distinctive (rhetorical) style, particularly evident in his rally speeches. These addresses are characterized by their informal tone, provocative content, and emotional appeal. Among the many factors of Trump's style, this paper focuses on a particularly effective aspect of his linguistic arsenal: the use of metaphors.
Metaphors are fundamental cognitive tools that shape our understanding of complex realities. In political discourse, they serve as powerful instruments for framing issues, influencing perceptions, and mobilising supporters. Trump's use of metaphors provides us with insights into both his political strategy and persuasive communication.

Excerpt from the Book
Metaphors in Donald Trump's speeches
Donald Trump's speeches are often long and characterized by improvisation, repetitions, and seemingly irrelevant interjections. Consequently, a systematic approach is indispensable. To avoid confusion, a selection of the metaphors to be examined must take place in advance.
The metaphors I will focus on are the nation as a physical structure (1), politics as warfare (2) and the economy as a living entity (3).
As for (1), Trump starts out by saying that “our border was secure” (Trump 2024a: 1, ll.14) and proceeds to say that the border was “overrun” (ibid.) which on one hand identifies the United States as having literal borders, but also conceptualises the nation as a physical structure whose integrity can be breached. The metaphor frames immigration as a physical threat appealing to feelings of security and vulnerability. In his Nevada rally speech Trump talks about the boarder wall and how it helped secure the country (Trump 2024b: 1, l.41), again evoking feelings of security and order.
In his Philadelphia rally speech he further implies that Philadelphia itself is a physical entity that can suffer damage and harm (Trump 2024a: 1, ll.26). This evokes a general emotional response and more specifically appeals to emotions such as fear and frustration. Trump utilises the City of Philadelphia, known for its important role in the fight for American independence, when he states that “we stand on the shoulders of American legends, who poured out their blood, sweat, and tears for our rights and for our freedom.” (Trump 2024a: 18, ll.733). This metaphor suggests that the current generation’s success and freedoms are physically built upon the efforts and sacrifices of past “legends” (ibid.).
