This term paper presents a full English translation of the German Chancellor’s New Year’s Address for 2024/25, followed by a critical analysis of the translation choices. Drawing on Mona Baker’s In Other Words (2018), the paper discusses lexical equivalence, syntactic shifts, register adaptation, and rhetorical strategies. It shows how translation is not just linguistic substitution, but cultural and pragmatic mediation. This work demonstrates how idiomatic, emotionally resonant, and politically effective translations are achieved in practice—ideal for students of translation studies, linguistics, and political discourse.
