Excerpt from the Book

Statement of the Problem

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into education presents a significant challenge, as its growing presence generates both global interest and debate. A key issue is that AI's introduction may disrupt the traditional teacher-student dynamic, potentially causing teachers to fear job displacement or the devaluation of their roles. This fear, coupled with resistance to change, may hinder teachers from adopting AI tools effectively. Similarly, students may harbour scepticism and mistrust towards AI, questioning its ability to provide reliable and personalised learning experiences. While previous studies have identified these concerns, many are yet to thoroughly identify the specific barriers to effectively implementing AI in the classroom, particularly in the context of Biology education. Efforts have been made to address these challenges, such as training programmes aimed at helping teachers adapt to AI tools and initiatives to build student trust in AI systems. However, these efforts have often been general, lacking a focus on the specific context of Biology education. This study aims to address this gap by exploring how these fears and mistrusts impact the application of AI in Biology education and how both teachers' and students' attitudes can be shifted to improve AI integration in the learning process. Unlike previous studies, this research will focus specifically on the challenges faced by educators and students in adapting to AI in the Biology classroom and propose strategies to overcome these barriers.
