The present book aims at highlighting and discovering the world of interpreting theory, especially its most recent approaches. Moreover, the book aims at testing and investigating hermeneutics as a theory and methodology. It discusses hermeneutics theory, highlighting the main principles of hermeneutics and how it has transformed from its religious template into the secular paradigm of interpretation. Moreover, it traces the main principles of hermeneutical thinkers for an attempt to establish a full comprehensive literary hermeneutical approach. This approach is able to discuss and analyze the most recent modes of both literature and art.

In addition, the book aims at linking religious hermeneutics to secular hermeneutics in order to cover all hermeneutical arenas. Bridging the gap between religious and secular hermeneutics will introduce an approach of understanding all human activities. Depending on the main characteristics of hermeneutics, the book will introduce a new reading and investigating of the theory in order to establish a middle ground between hermeneutics and literature.

Based on the main principles of futurology, the book aims at establishing a vision for the future possibilities of hermeneutics theory through tracing and investigating the development of the theory.

Excerpt from the Book

Hermeneutics: History and Principles

Reading the literary text is a two-way interactive process between the reader and the text. This process takes place through a triangular interaction between three factors: the reader, the text, and the cultural atmosphere of this text. In this interaction, the reader’s role is not negative but it is very active and vital, as he ⁄she has to work on making up the text’s meaning. Thus, the text’s interpretation is not a solid process; it changes according to certain criteria. Like the Alexandrite gemstone, whose color varies according to the surrounding circumstances, the text is always open to a number of possible interpretations.

There are certain factors and procedures which make up the accurate perceived meaning. The theory and method which can describe and deal with the interpretation of the text is known as hermeneutics. Hermeneutics is the methodology of interpreting human actions, especially texts. It started as a theory and methodology of religious texts’ interpretation but has been later expanded to questions of general interpretation. Hermeneutics is a ubiquitous activity as it exists whenever humans exist. It is a well-established theoretical and practical form of human intellectual investigation which aims at interpreting the text in the light of understanding the universe.

It is necessary to highlight four main confusing and overlapping terms which are considered the main focus of hermeneutics, and to differentiate between them. These terms are interpreting, explaining, and construing. “Explaining” depends on clarifying the meaning and removing obscurity. “Construing the meaning” is to make an assumption based on evidence which may change in order to serve the interpreter’s purpose. “Illustrating” means to shed light upon certain points in order to reach the accurate understanding of the text. However, hermeneutics remains the most general term which includes all previous forms of mental investigations as the hermeneutical process is an artistic and scientific inquiry which depends on certain mechanisms and methodologies which are applied to reach the most logical meaning.
