This seminar paper will sketch some of the elements of the cultural “Zeitgeist” that shaped and was reflected in Nella Larsen’s writings. But it will concentrate on the novels that she left behind: Quicksand and Passing. An important topic Larsen is dealing with is race-identity. Larsen assimilates these themes in her two novels, not by representing the lower-class problem, but more by focusing on the life and problems of middle-class females. It is more the psychological than the sociological side she portrays. This paper demonstrates that race identity and race dualism reflects Larsen’s own life story. First I will give an introduction on the Harlem Renaissance era. Then I will focus on Nella Larsen’s life. I will examine her two novels Quicksand and Passing to find out how race identity and race dualism is assimilated in her novels.

Excerpt from the Book

3. 1. Quicksand Plot Outline

The novel Quicksand, dramatizes Helga Crane’s constant dissatisfaction, restlessness and longing for something else, which seems to reflect Nella Larsen’s own life.

Helga, a sensuous mulatto woman of questionable birth, feels contempt for the pretentiousness of African-American middle-class society. At the same time, she is feeling her inability to release her own sensuality, a symbol for sexual repression. Helga Crane is unsatisfied and unfulfilled in life. Because she is mulatto, she finds it hard to fit in with various groups of people due to the issue of race that seems to come up everywhere she goes. In her search for happiness and for who she really is, Helga finds herself running from city to city, only to be ultimately dissatisfied.

The story begins with Helga resigning from a teaching job at a southern African-American institution in Naxos. She arrives in the small town to assist in teaching Negro children. In the beginning of starting her job she has many ideas and suggestions in to how to improve Negro education. Then all of sudden she feels unwelcome and out of place, often finding herself alone and isolated. Helga Crane is not capable in settling down in one place. She quits her job at Naxos and returns to what she considered as her home in Chicago. Yet she soon discovers that Chicago is not her home after all, and, in fact, she realizes that she really doesn’t have a place she can declare as her real home.
