This study examined the correlation between employee turnover and leadership skills and styles in the Jordanian drugstores sector. The purpose of this study was to discover the relationship between employee turnover and leadership skills and styles, the extent to which ineffective leadership skills contribute to employee turnover, as well as the extent to which the leadership style that is practiced influences employee turnover and makes recommendations for future actions. The study utilized a quantitative nonexperimental descriptive research design, and data was collected through surveys from employees in the drugstores sector. The sample consisted of 153 salespeople and medical representatives, and statistical analyses were conducted using Pearson correlation, Spearman’s rank correlation, and regression analysis. The findings revealed no statistically significant correlation between employee turnover and leadership skills and styles. Specifically, transformational leadership style did not correlate significantly with employee turnover. Similarly, transactional leadership style also did not show a significant correlation with turnover. The study suggested that salespeople and medical representatives in the drugstores sector may not need to prioritize adopting a specific leadership style to reduce turnover and enhance organizational performance. The study concluded with recommended future studies to explore the impact of different leadership training programs on reducing employee turnover in the drugstores sector. In addition, studies should be conducted to explore the impact of other factors, such as job satisfaction and organizational culture, on employee turnover. Overall, the findings of this study contribute to the ongoing discourse on employee turnover and leadership in the drugstores’ sector and provide insights for organizations to improve their practices and reduce employee turnover.

Excerpt from the Book

Background of the Problem

Reducing staff turnover is one of the top priorities for organizational leaders due to the significant challenges it poses (Michael & Fotiadis, 2022). Therefore, leaders are obligated to take measures to address this issue. Losing professional and well-trained employees harms the profitability, productivity, and sustainability of any company. In Jordan, commercial companies’ average employee turnover rate was 4.134% from July 2006 to October 2018 (Ceicdata, 2021). Jordanian drugstores represent a considerable part of the Jordanian commercial sector. Further research on the relevance between employee turnover and leadership skills and styles in Jordanian drugstores might help these companies improve policies and strategies that play a role in reducing employee turnover. In recent years, the importance of exploring the link between an organization's leadership quality and style and its employee turnover rate has gained prominence (Zhou et al., 2021; Donkor et al., 2022).

A problem exists in the Jordanian commercial sector where the average employee turnover rate was 4.134% from July 2006 to October 2018 (Ceicdata, 2021). Despite various professional, academic, and stakeholder studies that had been conducted to help develop strategies, policies, suggestions, and recommendations to address this problem, the issue continued to increase (Yang et al., 2012; Venkat et al., 2023). The highest employee turnover rate in Jordanian commercial companies within the period between July 2006 to October 2018 was 46.547% in June 2008 (Ceicdata, 2021). Employee turnover contributes to creating replacement costs and new hire training costs (Wang & Sun, 2019). This problem affects the productivity, profitability, and sustainability of Jordanian drugstores because the high rate of employee turnover in these companies may contribute to adding additional costs for them and losing professional and skilled employees who understand the goals and strategies of these companies and their specific roles to achieve these goals. This study investigated the relationship between employee turnover and leadership skills and styles using the quantitative nonexperimental descriptive technique to provide potential solutions.
