This got worse throughout the Industrial Revolution. People were graded by how many units of production they produced in an hour. The idea that being busy was the same as being good came with the rise of efficiency.

Her AI for lesson planning makes three structures based on the profiles of her students. The ideas are good and works well. Also, it's not specific.
She utilises an AI tool to find plagiarism. It works quickly and correctly. But her pupils seek ChatGPT for essay outlines before they ask her for help. Their first teacher is the AI.
She wonders if she is still a teacher or if she is just running an algorithm that instructs.

She utilises an AI voice assistant to remind her to take her medicine. It's useful, and it makes her feel like she needs a machine to remember what's important.

She tells an AI transcription app what to write in her memoirs. But there are instances when the software finishes her sentences. It modifies the ending sometimes.

 

The Grind Has Changed

 

The old grind was all about work and time. You worked hard, put in the time, and earned your achievement. It was tiring, but clear. The new grind is all about getting the most out of things. Being 12% more productive. Metrics that are always getting better. Being looked at, measured, and compared in real time. Putting on a show for algorithms. The paradox: we do more work than ever, but we feel less accomplished. More connected, but still alone. More knowledgeable, yet comprehend less profoundly.

AI said it will set us free. It was meant to release us from the daily grind so we could focus on creativity, connection, and meaning.

·         Learning analytics put pressure on us to always get better.

·         Productivity apps keep track of every minute, making you feel bad about resting

 

According to McKinsey study, AI helps workers save an average of two hours a day. But 67% say they are busier than they used to be. Stanford researchers call this "productivity guilt," which is the stress that comes with having more time yet feeling like you're falling further behind.

 

The issue is that we judge success by what we produce, not what we achieve. Not by importance, but by speed. By numbers, not by meaning.

In biology, the "mirror test" measures self-awareness. When a chimpanzee or dolphin recognizes itself in a mirror, scientists consider it a sign of consciousness.

It takes 15 minutes to have lunch. He works quickly. He's improved. He is also by himself.

 

He realizes he hasn't had a real conversation with a colleague in weeks. The people around him are all eating optimized meals, checking optimized schedules, responding to optimized notifications.

 

Everyone is grinding harder, but nobody is connecting.

 

Efficiency has stolen something precious: the space where real conversation happens. The time where relationships deepen. The moments where we're not productive, but we're present.

 

The Cult of Optimization

 

We live in the age of optimization. Every moment can be improved. Every process can be streamlined. Every interaction can be measured and enhanced.

We're in a constant state of partial attention. This is not productivity. This is the illusion of productivity.

 

Efficiency Steals Empathy

 

When we optimize for speed, we lose nuance. We lose the ability to read between the lines, to understand context, to feel what someone else is feeling.

 

Automated responses replace genuine care. Efficiency metrics ignore emotional labour. Speed kills the subtlety of human communication.

That meal means something. Efficiency has turned cooking into fuel consumption.

 

The Tyranny of the Metric: Goodhart's Law

 

The most powerful critique of metric-driven efficiency comes from economic theory: Goodhart's Law—"When a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure."

 

The moment a complex, qualitative human goal (like "meaningful creativity") is reduced to a simple metric (like "number of deliverables"), the metric is instantly corrupted.

 

Human behaviour shifts from pursuing the spirit of the goal to gaming the letter of the metric.

 

Case Study: The Corrupted Service Metric

 

Consider a company that adopts "Average Call Time (ACT)" as the core metric for customer service efficiency.

 

Original Goal: Resolve the customer's complex issue with empathy and thoroughness.

 

The Optimized Target: Reduce ACT to under three minutes.

 

The Result: Service agents begin immediately transferring complex calls, offering rushed solutions, or even hanging up on frustrated customers.

 

The metric successfully optimized time but systematically destroyed service quality and customer loyalty. The system is now efficiently delivering a poor result.

 

AI systems built on such narrow, efficiency-driven metrics simply accelerate this degradation. They become masters of optimized corruption.

 

Satisficing vs. Optimizing

 

The gospel of optimization demands that we continually search for the absolute "best" solution. Yet behavioural economics suggests humans do not, and often should not, operate this way.

 

Herbert Simon introduced the concept of Satisficing—a portmanteau of "satisfy" and "suffice."

 

Satisficing is the natural human tendency to seek a solution that is "good enough" to meet a necessary standard, rather than exhausting all resources to find the theoretical optimal solution.

 

While AI can run near-infinite iterations to find the optimal path, a human trying to replicate this process experiences severe diminishing returns. Searching for the 100% perfect decision often incurs an inordinate opportunity cost.

 

The pursuit of the optimal can lead to paralysis by analysis.

 

Humans are limited, messy beings, and our strength lies in our ability to make robust, timely, and integrated decisions.

 

The Value of Cognitive Slack

 

The Myth of Efficiency compels us to optimize everything, but it is a fundamental denial of the value of cognitive slack.

 

Cognitive Slack is the buffer of time, mental energy, and unassigned attention needed for reflective thought, accidental discovery, and spontaneous empathy.

 

The efficient AI uses every available resource immediately; the creative human requires inefficient downtime to recharge and synthesize.

 

Research shows that:

 

·         Mind-wandering (supremely inefficient) is strongly correlated with creative problem-solving and planning

·         Empathy (listening without immediately offering a solution) is inherently inefficient, requiring unhurried, focused attention

 

We must redefine efficiency not as the shortest path between two points, but as the path that maximizes long-term human value and integrity—even if that path includes necessary "waste" like staring out the window or having a non-transactional conversation.

 

Reclaiming Inefficiency

 

There's hope. We can reclaim inefficiency. We can choose to do things slowly, imperfectly, with intention.

 

Boredom Breeds Creativity

 

Research on mind-wandering shows that boredom is essential for creativity. When our minds wander, we make unexpected connections. We have insights. We generate new ideas.

 

But we've optimized boredom away. Every moment is filled with content. Every gap is filled with a notification.

 

We never have time to be bored. We've lost the space where creativity happens.

 

Inefficient Conversations Build Trust

 

Small talk isn't just trivial—it's how we build relationships. It's how we learn to trust each other. It's how we become human to each other.

 

But small talk is inefficient. It doesn't accomplish anything. It doesn't move us toward a goal.

 

So we've optimized it away. We send emails instead of talking. We schedule meetings instead of having conversations.

 

We're efficient and disconnected.

 

Unoptimized Time Allows Discovery

 

Serendipity requires space. It requires time that's not scheduled, not optimized, not directed toward a goal.

 

Some of the best ideas come from wandering. Some of the best discoveries come from accidents. Some of the best moments come from having nowhere to be.

 

But we've optimized wandering away. We've turned every moment into a means to an end.

 

The GRIND Response to Efficiency

 

The GRIND framework offers an antidote to the efficiency trap:

 

Growth: Learning requires inefficient exploration. We need time to ask questions, to follow tangents, to make mistakes. Deep learning can't be rushed.

 

Resilience: Rest is productive, not wasteful. We need time to recover, to reflect, to integrate what we've learned. Burnout comes from optimizing rest away.

 

Integrity: Authenticity can't be optimized. Real connection requires time, presence, and vulnerability. You can't fake it faster.

 

Novelty: Creativity needs unstructured time. The best ideas come when we're not trying to be productive. We need space to play, to experiment, to fail.

 

Discipline: Choosing depth over speed. Setting boundaries with optimization. Protecting time for what matters most.

 

Practical Strategies for Reclaiming Inefficiency

 

1. Schedule "Inefficient" Time

 

Put it on your calendar: time for walks, conversations, play, rest. Treat it as seriously as you treat meetings. Protect it.

 

2. Resist the Urge to Fill Every Gap

 

When you have 15 minutes between meetings, don't fill it with email. Sit. Think. Breathe. Let your mind wander.

 

3. Measure Outcomes, Not Outputs

 

Stop counting how many emails you send, how many tasks you complete, how many hours you work. Start measuring what actually matters: relationships, learning, meaning, impact.

 

4. Celebrate Process, Not Just Results

 

Notice the journey, not just the destination. Appreciate the struggle. Value the learning that happens along the way.

 

5. Create Tech-Free Spaces

 

Designate times and places where optimization doesn't apply. Family dinners without phones. Walks without podcasts. Conversations without multitasking.

The most efficient path is rarely the most meaningful one. Sometimes the detour is the destination.

 

We've optimized ourselves into a corner. We're more productive and less fulfilled. We're more connected and more alone. We're more informed and less wise.

 

It's time to reclaim inefficiency. Not as a luxury, but as a necessity. Not as laziness, but as resistance.

 

The grind doesn't have to be about optimization. It can be about intention. It can be about doing things that matter, at a pace that allows us to be present, with people we care about.

 

That's not inefficient. That's human.

The Notification Epidemic

Each check is a small hit of dopamine—and a small hit of anxiety.

We're all experiencing dopamine desensitization.

 

The Dopamine Economy
