This essay discusses Alvin and Heidi Toffler’s concept of “Revolutionary Wealth” and interprets wealth as a multidimensional phenomenon that goes beyond money to include knowledge, skills and education. Building on central arguments of the book, the text analyses three major drivers of transformation—technological progress, social change and economic restructuring—and critically contrasts selected forecasts with observable developments (e.g., automation, virtual communication, shifting family structures and productivity effects). The essay highlights both the explanatory power of the Tofflers’ paradigm shift and potential ambiguities regarding the normative stance and the distributional consequences of technology-driven growth.

Excerpt from the Book

Emerging Technology

Forty years ago, the authors predicted that the world would drastically change and people would have a different perspective on the notion of wealth in the future. One of the accelerators of change is the advancement of technology. The authors were right about the technological advancements because, in modern times, the use of technology has become very common and is changing how people live, from their workplaces to their homes. These predictions are evident in our daily lives since technology is leading to unemployment, which is causing changes to the way people live. The use of technology in workplaces has also resulted in an increase in income for the business since technology is more efficient and effective, thus leading to high-quality production (cf. Margherita & Braccini, 2023, pp. 995-1016). This is in line with the author’s prediction of the increase in money, as they had predicted that institutions and governments would become dramatically richer.

Even though the authors had predicted that people would be richer in their forecast that is not true for all people. Technology has significantly impacted productivity in workplaces, which has resulted in increased revenues, but it has also led to unemployment, which increases poverty in society. Therefore, their forecast is not reliable for forecasting the future.
