Research Objectives and Themes

This paper aims to explore the psychological development of Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) by analyzing the character "Joker" from the 2008 film "The Dark Knight." Excerpt from the Book

Narcissism and Root Causes

Firstly, narcissistic personality disorder is a psychological disorder leading a person to feel superiority than others. The person thinks more highly about themself as they are the king of the worlds.Symptoms of this disorder include: highly thinking about themselves, the person having the desire for special treatment, ignoring other’s feelings and low sense of empathy. Narcissistic personality disorder is defined within psychology for its arrogant behaviour, false fantasies and high level of self-importance ( Benellal , slide 79 , psychological disorder). This also includes envy. Envy is a strong and dangerous characteristic in a narcissist. We can explain this furthermore as the supervillain of Dark Knight. The development of Joker’s mental state leading to psychosis and narcissism is all correlated to his past. Arthur has suffered from physical and mental abuse by his adoptive parents ( Dark Knight,2008). This led him to a severe brain injury known as “Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)”. Traumatic brain injury can be caused by various things such as falls, abuse, accidents and physical assaults ( Geoffrey T. Manley et. al, 2025).This incident impacted the lateral aspect of the left frontal lobe( Bull,2021).This part of the brain is responsible for storing and processing information.

Summary of Chapters

Abstract: Provides an overview of the analysis, identifying the Joker as the central subject for examining the link between childhood trauma, brain injury, and narcissistic traits.

Narcissism and Root Causes: Examines the clinical definition of Narcissistic Personality Disorder and links the character's violent and arrogant behaviors to past physical and mental abuse resulting in a Traumatic Brain Injury.

Pseudobulbar and Impact on the brain: Analyzes how the character's brain damage affects neurotransmitter levels, specifically serotonin, glutamate, and dopamine, leading to uncontrolled emotional outbursts and psychotic symptoms.

Conclusion: Summarizes that the development of the character's narcissistic personality is a direct consequence of childhood trauma, physical brain injury to the left frontal lobe, and subsequent social exclusion.
