He wants to live on through something - and in his case, his masterpiece is his son. I think all of us want that, and it gets more poignant as we get more anonymous in this world.

This quote, said by the author of Death of a Salesman Arthur Miller in 1984, provides just a slight insight into the father-son relationship of Willy and Biff Loman which I will analyze in the present term paper in depth. Moreover, I will have a closer look at the Loman family and how they interact. Firstly, the author will be briefly introduced and the background and the reasons for writing the play are pointed out. Furthermore I will give an overview of the drama and its structure and formal aspects. After this my attention will be directed on the Loman family and I will initially focus on its members and characterize them. Then I will analyze how the relationship between Willy and Biff has developed and why it fails during the play. Finally, I will give a conclusion which will sum up the most important findings which I figured out during my analysis.

Excerpt from the Book

4.1 The Relationship Between Willy and Biff

In Death of a Salesman the relationship between the father Willy Loman and his oldest son Biff is one of the most important themes in the play. To describe it in depth, you have to draw the line at the moment when Biff gets to know about Willy’s infidelity because then, his ideal of life is shattered and their relationship changes.

Since Biff is “the son of the birthright, the son of Willy’s dreams”, he is always Willy’s preferred son. His father “has heaped all his hopes and ambitions and ideals of Success” on his son and Biff tried to answer his father’s expectation by being a successful football player in school who wants to go to university in the future. He had totally adopted Willy’s view of life, his visions of becoming a successful man in the future and his father’s maxim “Be liked and you will never want”. Biff acted in this way until he revealed Willy’s love affair when he aged seventeen. This revelation was the breaking off between him and Willy because it was the first time in life that Biff really needed his father’s help, namely concerning his graduation. However, Willy disappointed his son in the worst sense by being a “liar” and a “phony little fake”. After this argument, Biff was so seriously shocked that he could not go on with school and university and just became a casual worker in the West.
