Firstly, a social year would create a smoother transition between work life and retirement for pensioners. Even though many people are looking forward to their retirement, it can be a huge psychological and social challenge. According to Wolfgang Lutz, founding director of the Wittgenstein Centre for Demography and Global Human Capital, “many people live longer and do so mostly in good health. The saying ‘Seventy is the new 60’ has a sound scientific basis” (2). Therefore, retired people can use their prolonged lifetime to serve their duty for society in a social service year. In most capitalism-shaped societies, people tend to make their identity and worth as human being conditional on their jobs. Hence, self-isolation and other social issues can be potential consequences of retiring (Sweeny 7:12-50). Loneliness is one of the biggest social problems of our time, especially among the elderly. As a result, there is already a considerable part of retired people who are exchanging their paid job for caregiving work on a voluntary basis. The mandatory social year would simply be an extension of this as a duty for all retired persons. All pensioners would benefit since this duty would prevent the above-mentioned potential dangers of retirement. That way they could keep their self worth, and society would appreciate them more at the same time, which would prevent ageism and other forms of age discrimination.
Of course, pensioners could choose between several options to pick the field which matches best with their personality and working experience. Ideally, pensioners would continue with their social work after the end of the mandatory year because they realize that it is a win-win situation for all persons involved. Some might argue that some pensioners are not healthy enough to complete their year of social service. However, there is a simple solution to that problem: Just like it is the case in military service, pensioners who are not healthy enough to take part would obviously be exempted from the duty or could work fewer hours as long as their condition allows it. Precisely in the complicated phase between work life and retirement, a mandatory year of social service can make an important contribution to the success of the aforementioned phase. Consequently, pensioners would benefit from a measure like that, and ideally even continue with their social work after the end of their mandatory time.
