The service economy is undergoing a major transformation as artificial intelligence, automation, digital platforms, remote work, and changing patterns of consumption reshape the nature of employment. However, the benefits of this transformation are not being distributed evenly across the workforce. This article examines the emerging K-shaped service economy, in which high-skilled workers increasingly move toward higher productivity, better earnings, greater flexibility, and technology-supported opportunities, while many gig and lower-paid service workers continue to experience income instability, limited social protection, and weaker career mobility. Drawing on recent evidence and literature, the article connects the broader concept of the K-shaped economy with differences in employment, income, wealth, consumption, skills, and access to technology. Previous evidence shows that low-wage workers experienced more persistent employment losses during the COVID-19 recovery, while recent research indicates that differences in wealth, inflation, and financial resilience have contributed to widening economic outcomes across income groups. Recent analyses also suggest that technological change, particularly artificial intelligence, may further strengthen this divergence because workers with advanced skills and greater access to technology are better positioned to benefit from productivity gains. At the same time, digital platforms are creating new opportunities for flexible work while raising concerns about job security, social protection, and algorithmic management. The article argues that the K-shaped service economy should not be viewed as an unavoidable outcome of technological progress. Instead, its future will depend on the accessibility of skills development, responsible technology adoption, labour-market institutions, social protection, and opportunities for upward mobility. The article concludes that the central challenge is not to prevent technological transformation but to ensure that more workers can move toward the rising side of the service economy.
