The Threat of the Giant
José Martí‘s “Nuestra América“ is written as a call for unity, pride and nation building within Latin America. This attempt is very much reflected in the style of writing Martí uses. As already mentioned he tries to give a negative picture of the two intruders Europe and North America to define a unique Latin American identity. To do this he uses a very colourful and poetic language. The first paragraph of his article creates an almost fairytale - like atmosphere. A village with a mayor, a rival and his stolen sweetheart; the perfect harmony is threatened by the “giants with seven-league boots“.
The only response to this threat should be, according to Martí, to be alert and ready to fight: “These are not times for sleeping in a nightcap, but with weapons for a pillow“ (Martí 1891: §1). The “giants with seven - league boots“, an element of European folklore, represent the constant threat of a U.S. American invasion. This personification draws attention to the North American origin: although considered a “new“ threat it is still connected to the original oppressor Europe. Martí continues to define Latin America through nature imagery, since the rich nature is something that has always been a unique characteristic of these countries: “We can no longer be a people of leaves, living in the air, our foliage heavy with blooms and crackling or humming at the whim of the sun‘s caress, or buffeted and tossed by the storms. The trees must form ranks to keep the giant with seven- league boots from passing“ (Martí 1891: §2).
