The purpose of the present thesis is to examine if and to which extent cultures converge in an international business environment and if intercultural competence has a bearing on it. Therefore, theoretical and practical insights in the subject of culture, its implicit and explicit differences, as well as its measurements will be provided. Due to the fact that communication - as a major cultural attribute - is the most obvious level on which cultural differences are recognized, insights in the topic of cross-cultural and intercultural communication will be given. A thorough discussion of the concept of culture and communication is beyond the scope of this paper, but in what follows, an adequate overview of recognized and well-known researchers? theories and findings will be provided. Besides giving theoretical background knowledge, it will be examined whether the internationally defined soft skills of intercultural competence can be seen as an approach towards a universal interculture, likewise a universal communication. The topic of the present thesis will be illustrated by a case study, as well as researched and evaluated by a field study conducted at one of the most culturally diverse organization - the United Nations. Findings should only expose tendencies to confirm or disprove previous research findings in the field of cross-cultural comparative research and intercultural communication. It is not intended to present new empirical findings.

1 Introduction
The transfer of business activities across nations is growing at a rapid rate. The emergence of market economies in Latin America and Asia, the collapse of communism in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, and the emerging democracy in Africa have led, among other things, not only to increased global trade, international, multinational and transnational business, but also to an increased demand for international workforce since firms must employ people who possess international business skills in order to remain competitive in the global marketplace (Deresky, 2000; Gesteland, 2003; Nolan, 1999; Romani, 2004).
How often does it happen that we meet someone doing business in the United States after representing his/her company in Asia, Middle East or Europe? How often do we meet someone obtaining an international degree abroad before doing business in China, France or Scandinavia? How often do companies require international experiences, mobility, and flexibility? The soft skills of intercultural competence and open-mindedness to cultural diversity are taught by universities around the world. But what happens with our own cultural identity while doing business worldwide? What happens if we conduct business in Japan but with an Italian colleague who lived in Sao Paulo for many years? Are we just applying intercultural competence or are we developing a universal business culture - apart from our own national culture? How does an international workforce communicate; is it adapting the communication style of the host-country, of a majority culture; or is it developing a communication style which is unique in international business? Are wespeaking the same ‘language’ at the end? Is the understanding of cultural diversity becoming less substantial and more Implicit? If companies and organizations require the Indispensable and vague defined soft skills of intercultural competence, could these skills be seen as an approach towards a universal business culture, likewise a universal business communication?
1.1 Purpose of the Present Thesis

1.2 Structure of the Present Thesis
In the following chapter the topic of the present paper will be Illustrated by a case study of the United Nations Headquarters in New York. It shows today’s global working environment with a culturally diverse workforce and its accompanied cultural bias, difficulties and influences. Expected and Inescapable problems as well as misunderstandings due to different cultures and communication patterns will be demonstrated. Furthermore, Implemented and applied intercultural competence of the participants will be presented.
With the purpose of exploring tendencies of cultural convergence, likewise communication convergence in an intercultural environment, the third and fourth chapter will provide theoretical Insights into culture as well as communication. After defining the subject and Introducing several layers of culture as well as their Implication, four cross-cultural comparative research studies will be Illustrated as significant contributions to the topic. With the purpose ofcomparlng cultures the Cultural Orientation Framework, which combines ten approved dimensions by which cultures can be distinguished, will be Introduced and the dimension of communication - as a major cultural attribute - will be described in more depth. After looking at culture from the perspective of communication, the topic of communication will be described and evaluated from the cultural perspective. Hence, communication, especially cross-cultural and intercultural communication, will be scrutinized and the concept of communication will be reviewed by Introducing several theoretical models. Furthermore, verbal and non-verbal communication as the two levels of communication will be described and Illustrated by several cross-cultural examples.
After giving theoretical Insights on culture and communication, a detailed encounter of the methodology developed to test the given hypotheses will be provided in chapter six. The research approach and design will be Illustrated and scrutinized. This chapter will also discuss strengths and limitations of the field study.
In chapter seven it will be analysed if members of an international workforce converge in their cultural behaviour to communicate and therefore develop a universal business communication, or even a universal business culture. It will be examined if Individuals develop such a culture In addition to their national culture or even ‘lose’ their cultural Identity by replacing it. Furthermore, it will be questioned if the soft skills of the intercultural competence are the cause for a universal business culture and communication style respectively. These questions will be answered by looking at three different sub-hypotheses. In addition, literature supporting theories of acculturation and cultural convergence as well as intercultural competence will be outlined and linked to empirical research findings.
For the reason of convenience, the present thesis has been divided into tow parts: the research thesis as the theoretical part and the appendix, which Includes several figures Illustrating concepts, models, and definitions as well as tables presenting collected data.
2 Case Study
In what follows, the topic of the present thesis will be Illustrated by a case study of four cultural diverse students Interning at the United Nations Internship Office for duration of six month. The development of a new Online Application System and a new Data Warehouse, assigned to the four interns, requires not only team spirit but also intercultural competence.
Monday morning - 9:30A.M.
The United Nations Headquarters, New York; Conference Room S 2513
Susan Watson, Chief of Human Resources Management and Anne Koslowsky, Internship Coordinator, had scheduled a meeting with seven of their colleagues - four interns and three IT specialists - to put them in charge of developing the most recent administrative innovation in the United Nations Internship Office - an Online Application System and a new Data Warehouse.
The three IT specialists to whom programming of the software has been assigned are early and take their seats in one corner of the room. Just when Susan Watson starts wondering when interns - the actual prospective users of the new software - became less zealous than IT ‘nerds’, the door opens, and Julia Abdulgani enters the conference room. Having taken all her, admittedly superficial, information from Anne Koslowsky, the supervisor of the four young fellows, Susan Watson is surprised at how much of an Asian you can actually get when you have been told to expect a Dutch woman. Anne Koslowsky has hardly finished Introducing her when Jens Elsenberg enters the room and chimes in to relieve Anne Koslowsky of the task of presenting him to the others. With a slight but unmistakable American attitude and an Impressively well tied cravat, he Introduces himself as Jens from Germany. Waiting behind him is Apu Narendra Raddy Katkurl, who seems to lack of talkativeness or, Susan Watson thinks, is simply using all his concentration on the coordination of a permanent affirmative nod and sniffing his snot. Anne Koslowsky Informs her co-workers that Apu Narendra is originally from India and is currently obtaining an MBA in London. After all the participants have taken their seats, Ms Koslowsky has a look at her watch and; presuming that the last intern must be delayed; begins the meeting. Susan Watson is presenting the general purpose of the new system as well as enumerating the tasks of the project. A knock on the door Interrupts her, the door opens, and Helene, a fellow from France, asks to be excused for her delay - with an accent-free Oxford English. She takes a seat next to the IT colleague from China and smartly salutes him in Mandarin. Finally, Susan Watson can resume her presentation of the project at hand.
After a two hour back and forth of questions and demands, Susan Watson excuses herself while her colleagues are still engaged in a vivid discussion. Bereft of all hope, she turns around at the door and takes a last look. What she is observing is a scene like this: “We should change the whole concept and start from scratch”, Jens imposes himself. Julia interrupts to note that changes will be difficult. “I’ve been with the office for three months now and the suggestions you are making run contrary to all the accustomed structures. Unless it is completely Indispensable, you should not change these structures.” Jens is wondering about Julia’s attitude and asks for a more proactive approach. Could there be any more harmonious work habits, Susan Watson thinks, not daring to Imagine how Apu Narendra would add to this commotion if he would say anything at all. Now and then he is turning his head to look at Anne Koslowsky expectantly. While Julia and Jens are still discussing and arguing about general changes, Helene is
wondering of what use this whole discussion might eventually be. ‘‘Anne, what is to be done; how can we solve these problems and what should we do?”
Even if they are speaking English, Susan Watson can barely shake off the Impression that the four interns were each speaking a different language. A desperate and doubtful Susan Watson leaves the room. A few hours later she calls Anne Koslowsky telling her of her uncertainties concerning the constellation of the group and the compatibility of their respective approaches. Unveiling her worst fears to Anne, she tells her that she can hardly Imagine this group of young people fulfilling their task successfully and that it might have been a mistake to assign them the job. “It seems to me these interns are too different.” Anne Koslowsky tries to convince her to put some trust in the four interns. “Believe me, Susan; I know these interns and I have reason to believe that they will make a good team.”
For more than 15 years the United Nations Headquarters have been facilitating the Internship Programme whose purpose it is “to provide a framework by which [...] students from diverse academic backgrounds may be assigned to United Nations offices, where their educational experiences can be enhanced through practical work assignments” (United Nations, 2000). The program provides an opportunity to work with people of diverse nationalities and cultures. This cross-cultural experience promotes diversity of thought, tolerance and respect among individuals in an increasingly interdependent world. The United Nations Internship Office is a unit of the Office of Human Resources Management that employs a workforce of more than 20 nations. It is managed by regular employees and interns alike. Currently and for a period of six months these interns are Julia, Jens, Apu Narendra, and Helene (United Nations, 2000; 2006).
Julia Abdulgani is 27 years old, was born in Indonesia and grew up in The Netherlands where her parents migrated to. She is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in business administration specializing in human resources management and a Bachelor in psychology in Amsterdam. Julia speaks Dutch, Indonesian and English fluently; and she understands German and Spanish. She holds a strong connection to her family in Indonesia. Her parents raised Julia with Indonesian as well as Dutch values and beliefs. She has been an intern with the United Nations Internship Office for three months now.
Jens Eisenberg is 27 years old and he is from Germany. He is studying business administration with a specialization in human resources management at a British university and a German business school. Before doing his internship at the United Nations, he was an intern at an international automotive company in the USA. Jens has spent a year in Central America gaining work experience and he speaks German and English fluently and is conversant in Spanish and French. He has been with the Internship Office for two months now.
Apu Narendra Reddy Katkuri is a 24-years-old student from India. After studying automobile engineering in India, he went to Windsor, Great Britain, where he earned an MBA in International Management. Apu Narendra’s origins lie in a high Indian caste and most of his family immigrated to the USA more than 20 years ago. Apu Narendra speaks several languages common in India as well as fluent English. He has been supporting the team of the Internship Office for four weeks so far.
Helene Sejou-LaRoche is a 22-year-old French woman. She was 13 years old when she moved with her parents to Singapore, where they stayed for more than three years before moving to Geneva. After another three years Helene returned to France where she obtained a Bachelor degree before studying business administration. She did a one-year internship in London, before her internship at the United Nation, where she has been for four weeks.
Employees at the United Nations Internship Office act as the liaison between interns and the United Nations departments, as well as handle external queries about the program. Responsibilities include screening and recommending applicants to departments as well as administrating them. Other tasks involve organizing and chairing meetings as well as representing the program (United Nations, 2000; 2006). One of the main projects in which all four interns are involved is the design and implementation of the new Online Application System and Data Warehouse for the Internship Office. All four interns have an internationally-oriented background and are familiar with different cultures. All of them feel very confident in an international working environment and have developed very good interpersonal skills.
Immediately following the meeting, the four interns go for lunch together in the cafeteria. They want to take this chance to discuss their approaches to their new assigned project. Julia is having a Tom-Kha-Gal soup and pasta, Jens is eating a cheeseburger and a Caesar salad, and Apu Narendra is enjoying his Chlcken-Tlkka-Masala. Helene needed to stop by her office and joins them a few minutes later with a cafe-au-lait and a croissant on her tray and with a big smile on her face: “Salut, ça va?” Jens has a look at her lunch and Ironically remarks: “Oh, the French and their croissants.” Helene retorted: ‘You Germans and your, oh wait, you’re having a burger. See how much you have turned into an American already?” Jens tells her that his eating habits might relate to his having always lived in countries in which burgers count as staple food, like Guatemala, England and the USA. “I know what you are talking about,” Helene replies, “I’ve only been to places where they have really bad croissants, if any. So I’m benefiting." The interns spend the rest of their lunch break telling each other from where they are coming, what they do and why they are Interning at the United Nations. Apu Narendra rhapsodizes about his beloved England and Julia tells them about her cousin’s traditionally wedding in Jakarta.
On their way out of the cafeteria, Jens suggests: “Coffee?” “Jens”, Julia says in an unnerved but ironical way knowing that it is not the first time she is telling him this, “Don’t be so harsh.” And turning to the others: “This must be a German habit. They sound rude, sometimes harsh, but they don’t mean it that way; maybe they are just shy showing emotions,” and smiles.
Apu Narendra and Jens are discussing a few tasks that need to be done by the end of the week. Halfway through, Apu Narendra asks: “What exactly am I supposed to do?” Jens expresses himself on what he thinks Apu should do and what he himself will do. “Got it, Master Jens!”
Jens is on his way to Julia’s office in order to provide her with the information she requested. After asking her whether she needs anything else, he tells her that Apu has taken to call him Master Jens. “I have noticed that, Master Jens”, Julia is laughing at him. “Am I giving too many orders”, Jens is wondering. “Perhaps“, Julia replies, “but is it not typical of Indians to accept orders and acknowledge their approval by perennially nodding their head”. However, Jens points out: “Maybe it is but Apu has also adopted a lot of typically English ways of behaviour. ‘You never give me orders. We both never give orders to each other“, Julia remarks. You’re right; we talk to each other in a quite different way, maybe. That is because we both always know what the other expect and what needs to be done without any precise and detailed directives from the other.” “Interesting”, Jens replies.
The four interns are coming back from a mid-term meeting with their IT colleagues. They had met in order to verify whether, in the process of programming the software, the requirements had been implemented so far and to discuss further steps. Dissatisfied about how the meeting has been held and about how both teams were approaching each other, the interns are reviewing the reunion. ‘They were beating around the bush from beginning to end. These guys seem to be incapable of giving a simple and direct answer to a simple and direct question“, says Jens. You’re right”, Helene agrees. “Even when we approached them in a more indirect manner, I didn’t understand what their point was. Did you, Apu?” - “No, I didn’t get them, either, even though I’m used to beating around the bush. All they ever said was that everything was possible and that there weren’t any problems.” Yes“, Julia joins in, “and the program they eventually showed us basically met with none of the criteria we constantly outlined in our previous meetings. Did I not express myself clearly when I presented our concept and its requirements?” “I think you were always as straightforward, clear and pragmatic as possible”, says Jens, “and at the same time as formal, sensitive and respectful as necessary towards our Asian colleagues.” Apu and Helene agree. “Whatever”, the latter sums up. “We will have to adapt our wordings and presentation styles to make ourselves as clear as possible and necessary. But as long as the four of us understand each other, we should be fine”, she smiles.
Jens has come to get Helene for their weekly update on the project. Helene emerges from a messy pile offiles and papers and glances at Jens with his neatly arranged documents under his arm. “Just give me a second, Jens. I just need to finish this chart. Julia likes it colourful and shiny.” “Oh, you’ve almost become as perfectionistic as the Germans”, Jens says. She is smiling back at him: “Idiot! I just try to see things through my colleagues’ eyes, dude”.
In Apu Narendra’s office, the four interns are giving each other a heads up on what they have done so far, what problems they have encountered, and what should be done next. Apu interrupts the discussion and points out a problem that the others have not yet thought of. He even offers the perfect solution. “Apu, I didn’t know that you could be this talkative”, Julia says. “Well, you know, we Indians only talk if we really have to say something,” Apu replies cheerfully.
After the meeting, they go to the cafeteria. Julia and Jens are having a cafe-au-lait and a croissant. “Hm, I’m not sure what to take. What are you having, Apu?” “Not sure, either, Helene. Maybe I’m gonna try something new.”
Friday afternoon - 4:30 P.M.

Three months later, Anne Koslowsky scheduled a meeting for the final presentation of the new Online Application System and the new Data Warehouse that has been developed by four culturally diverse interns. These four interns presented a final product of outstanding success. After all of her doubts Susan Watson realized they have worked quite well as a team of such cultural diversity. Somehow they managed to have a perfect intercultural communication and established intercultural competence while understanding each others background. They acknowledge cultural differences and encouraged an open-minded and respectful working environment. Susan Watson realized that the four interns had more in common than she could see three months ago; somehow they were not that different at all. After their presentation, Ms Watson complimented the team of four young interns stating that “these interns exhibit astonishing international competence and a great intercultural communication approach which should be an example for everybody in this organization.”
As indicated in the case study, problems and misunderstandings as a result of cultural diversity and different approaches to communication are expected and sometimes inescapable. However, the four interns were successful and highly efficient in their assignment; they collaborated and established rapport due to a ‘shared understanding'. The group of four young students understood each other not only by using English as the same language but also by developing a common - maybe universal - communication style.
With the purpose of exploring tendencies of convergence in culture and communication, theoretical Insights in the two topics have to be given. Likewise, it is essential to look at some of the ways in which cultures and communication patterns vary. Therefore, cross-cultural comparative research has to be stressed and communication will be defined as a variable in which cultures distinguish themselves. The theoretical background provided in the following two chapters will help understanding the process ofcultural convergence and adaptation.
3 Culture and its Implications
In what follows, the subject of culture will be defined as adequately and comprehensively as possible, differences of culture and their Implications will be Introduced, as well as four cross- cultural comparative research studies - the surveys of Hofstede; Trompenaar & Hampden- Turner; Lane, DiStefano, & Maznevskl as well as the GLOBE Research Project - will be described and evaluated as significant contributions to the topic. The chapter will conclude with the Cultural Orientation Framework of Walker, Walker, & Schmitz (2003) that combines ten approved cultural dimensions by which cultures can be distinguished.
3.1 Definition of Culture
It should be noticed that the term culture is too elusive to define precisely enough. What generally is understood by culture, and likewise what culture defines, differs widely throughout the literature. It is differentiated between the popular definitions and those given by anthropologists, sociologists, and psychologists (Harzlng, 2004). The common definition Involves, for instance music, theatre, and art but does not recognize that it derives from a more complex structure of understanding (Watson, 2002). Within the scientific literature of international management and sociology there is no absolute and overall accepted definition. In their book Culture: A Critical Review of Concepts and Definitions, Kroeber & Kluckhohn (1952) list more than 200 definitions of culture. They summarize culture as a construct which “consists of patterns, explicit and implicit, of and for behavior acquired and transmitted by symbols, constituting the distinctive achievements of human groups, including their embodiments in artefacts; the essential core of culture consists of traditional [...] ideas and especially their attached values; culture systems may, on the one hand, be considered as products of action, and on the other as conditioning elements of further action" (Kroeber & Kluckhohn, 1952, p.181). Hofstede (1991), as one of the leaders in cross-cultural research, defines culture as “the collective programming of the mind which distinguishes the members of one category of people from another" (Hofstede, 1991, p.18). The GLOBE Research Project scrutinizes culture as the concept of practices and values, and defines culture according to the anthropologist Redfield (1948) who sees culture as “shared understandings made manifest in act and artefacts” (Redfield, 1949, cited by House, 2004c, p.xv). Redfield’s (1948) definition reflects Schein’s (1987) approach conceptualising culture. He defines culture as “the pattern of basic assumptions that a given group has invented, discovered, or developed in learning to cope with its problems of external adaptation and internal integration, and that have worked well enough to be considered valid, and, therefore, to be taught to new members as the correct way to perceive, think and feel in relation to these problems” (Schein, 1987, p.9) {Appendix: Figure 1). Hatch (1993) developed a framework which includes symbols as an additional level in Schein’s model of culture {fypendix: Figure 2). It is less obvious if someone differs culturally; what is obvious, however, is the way in which these differences are expressed. Most likely it will be expressed through communication, especially in an international business environment. Hall (1959, 1976) identifies a strong correlation between culture and communication while stating that “culture is communication and communication is culture” (Hall, 1959, p.169). According to the anthropologist Hall (1959, 1976, 1990), culture is learned through formal, informal and technical means and always expressed, achieved and perpetuated through communication - culture is a system for creating, sending, storing, and processing messages. Culture is therefore passed on via communication and communication reflects someone’s culture. That is why the subject of communication will be stressed in more depth in the next chapter.
Even if the concepts of culture differ widely throughout the literature, many authors find consensus in shared patterns of values and basic assumptions, norms and beliefs, as well as behaviours, practises, and artefacts as the origin of culture. These shared patterns are learned through a process of socialization. They are identifying members of a culture group while distinguishing those of another group (Hofstede, 1980; Hofstede 2001; Kroeber & Kluckhohn, 1952; Trompenaar & Hampton-Turner, 1997, 2006; Lane, DiStefano, & Maznevski, 1992; Schein, 1997, 1993). Following, these shared patterns will be described as cultural layers.
3.2 Cross-Cultural Comparative Research Theories
Cultures are different - there are explicit and implicit differences which do not appear randomly; they appear because cultures are Influenced by climate, geography, religion, economy, trade, and history; each bringing to bear unique influences (House, 2004b). The study of differences between societies has been approached from two complementary perspectives: institutional and cultural theories. While the institutional theory focuses the institutional environment, such as laws, labour, and regulations, the cultural theory Investigates the influences derive from culture, which is focused in the present thesis (Romani, 2004). Cultural differences can be encountered at different levels in which Individuals are embedded. Nolan (1999) distinguishes between:
- Perceptions, as the way of seeing the same things differently;
- Interpretations, as the way of selecting, Interpreting, and remembering the same things differently;
- Facts, as the way the same situations are defined differently;
- Goals, as the different purposes or mindsets people from different cultures have;
- Methods, as the different ways people from different cultures achieve their goals; and
- Values, as the different application of standards in order to evaluate situations, Individuals, behaviours, and outcomes.
Apart from this categorization, many researchers emphasize the distinction of cultures by Identifying behaviours, norms, values, and basic assumptions1 (typendix: Figure 1) (Hofstede, 1997, 2001; Maznevski, DiStefano, Gomez, Noorderhaven, Wu, 2002; Romani, 2005; Schein, 1993; Sorge, 2004; Trompenaar & Hampton-Turner, 2006). Behaviours, like any form of human action, are comparatively explicit, but norms and values on which behaviours rest are rather Implicit (Romani, 2004; Trompenaar & Hampton-Turner, 2006). Norms are Implicitly justified by values and are the origin of individuals’ behaviours; they describe what is usually considered to be appropriate in a society (Hofstede, 2001; Romani, 2004). Values are defined by Romani (2004) and Hofstede (2001) as deeply routed beliefs about what is desirable. However, the relationship between values, norms and behaviour is far more complex than causality. In each culture, specific behaviours or practises are persistent because people find it falsified, unethical or unappealing to do otherwise (Jameson, 1994; Hofstede, 1997). These shared patterns are defined either by common characteristics or by social interaction and derive from values and basic assumptions. Early childhood socialization, education and work experiences are potential reasons for a specification of members of the same group. Each individual may react differently to the processes, but even when they do, they share a common sense for acceptable responses (Hofstede, 2001; Romani, 2004; Sorge, 2004).
It is evident that cultures are different. There are obvious differences such as artefacts and behaviours but also highly implicit differences such as values and assumptions (Hofstede, 2001; Schein, 1987). One of the main questions in management literature is how culture and its differences can be measured comprehensively (Hofstede, 2001; Jameson, 1994; Romani, 2004; Trompenaar & Hampton-Turner, 2006). The following section will centre these measurements while discussing four significant cross-cultural comparative research studies.
3.3 Cross-Cultural Comparative Research Studies
Referring to established authors in cross-cultural management, the comparison of cultures is a highly complex assignment and requires the identification of universal dimensions that are common to all cultures. Members of a specific society have developed similar behaviours, practises and norms, as well as similar values and basis assumptions. Only with pre-defined observable dimensions cultures are comparable (Hofstede, 1984; House & Javidan, 2004; Trompenaar & Hampton-Turner, 2006; Walker, et al., 2003). Cultural dimensions are provided as instruments in order to understand that someone’s cultural background may differ. While focusing on dimensions, shared experiences of members can be evaluated and categorized since cultural dimensions rest on value systems - culture is consequently presented as composed of values organized in dimensions. In the field of cross-cultural comparative research, cultural dimensions are seen as adequate, consequential and ample (Romani, 2004).
Within the majority of management and sociology literature, cultures are often differentiated by nationalities but nationalities are seldom monolithic or completely uniform. According to Reynolds & Valentine (2004), every culture has a minimum of seven or eight subcultures. It is undoubted that there are always variations within each national sample. Even with a cultural variation within each nationality, the distinction by countries as political, social and cultural entities seems adequate for cross-national comparative research2 (Reynolds & Valentine, 2004; Hofstede, 1991; House & Javldan, 2004). The internal variation within each country has been found to be not as significant as between the national samples themselves (Hofstede, 2001).
The following section will review four cross-national comparative research studies identifying cultural dimensions as the measurement of differences. These quantitative studies offer a sample of significant contributions to the positivist debate on the nature of culture. The chapter will conclude with the Cultural Orientation Framework developed by Walker et al (2003) as an appropriate summary of measurable differences of cultures. It combines ten approved cultural dimensions based on generally accepted cross-cultural theory studies. A short description of each dimension as well as its correlation to the four cross-cultural comparative research studies will be given in theAppentf/x: Textnote 2. It has to be mentioned that the majority of the cross-cultural literature reflects North American-based research, and therefore a generalization of assumptions and findings is of limited validity (House & Javldan, 2004; Teagarden, 2005).
3.3.1 Hofstede
Hofstede (1980, 1997, 2001) explored differences in ‘thinking and social action’ at the national level. He surveyed more than 160.000 employees of IBM from 50 nations and three regions. The questionnaires which focused on employees’ company attitudes were conducted around 1968 and 1972. Hofstede (1980) Identified and validated four, later five, cultural dimensions for which he presented possible origins as well as predictors and consequences for management behaviours (Hofstede, 2001). These Identified cultural dimensions are:
- Power Distance,
- Uncertainty Avoidance,
- Individualism versus Collectivism,
- Masculinity versus Femininity,
- Long-term versus Short-term Orientation3 (Hofstede, 2001).
Hofstede categorizes these five dimensions as being universal because they appear to be fundamental problems for every society (Romani, 2004). For each cultural dimension, Hofstede constructed an index in order to map each of the observed country according to their scores (Hofstede, 2001). Hofstede (1997) refers to the ‘mental programming’. He argues that culture is partly learned unconsciously due to deep-rooted values which are unique to the specific culture. This ‘programming of the mind’ influences individual’s acting and thinking (Hofstede, 1997).
Undoubtedly, Hofstede is one of the leaders in cross-cultural research mainly because of his quantitative survey. It allows for comparisons across countries while cultural dimensions could be validated with significant hard data. Until that time, culture was seen as something which could not be quantified, measured or analyzed. Hofstede’s contribution significantly and Irrevocably Influenced the way culture is perceived and substantiated shows the role of culture in managerial behaviours (Bing, 2004; Romani, 2004; Venezia, 2005). His work has been extensively reviewed and received a good deal of scrutiny. Blom & Meier (2004) criticize Hofstede’s equalization of countries as cultural areas as well as his focus on IBM data. Bing (2004), Sondergaard (1994), and Venezia (2005) highlight the most frequently raised criticism of Hofstede’s research: the methodology, the choice of nations and the obsolescence of the data. Still, Hofstede is one of the most cited authors when referring to culture and cultural differences.
3.3.2 Trompenaar & Hampden-Turner
Trompenaar & Hampden-Turner (1997, 2006) also applied cultural dimensions to compare countries, likewise cultures. They surveyed more than 30,000 managers from multinational and international companies in 55 countries. According to the authors, each culture has to cope with three universal problems: social interaction, relationship to environment, and passage of time. The characteristics that each culture provides as answers to these problems are described by seven cultural dimensions (Trompenaar & Hampden-Turner 1997):

The first five dimensions are adapted from Parsons & Phils’ work (1954, cited by Romani, 2004) while the last two dimensions are based on research done by psychologists and anthropologists on individuals’ concepts of time, like Hall, and individuals’ control over environment, like, Rotter. For each dimension the authors provide examples and expected consequences. Trompenaar & Hampden-Turners (2006) survey confirms the ability to compare cultures on the basis of dimensions. In addition, their research further developed the concept of culture with the focus on meanings (Romani, 2004). Trompenaar & Hampden-Turner’s, along with Hofstede’s survey, is one of the largest databases available for the study of cross-cultural management. Romani (2004) concludes that Trompenaar & Hampden-Turner enhance Hofstede’s research by extending the number of cultural answers by the fundamental problem of ‘social interaction’ and adding a dimension which deals with individuals’ attitudes to the environment. Although there are many similarities to Hofstede’s research, Trompenaar & Hampden-Turner disagree with Hofstede on the essence of culture (Romani, 2004). His definition is justified on social science theories of the 1950s: “Ideas and especially their attached values” is "the essential core of culture” (Hofstede, 2001, p.65) while Trompenaar & Hampton-Turner (1997, 2006) positions meanings, and thus, an individual’s interpretation of these meanings, as the core of culture.
3.3.3 Lane, DiStefano & Maznevski
Another cross-cultural comparative research study which focuses on cultural dimensions is the work of Lane & DiStefano and later together with Maznevski (1992). They adapted and discussed Kluckhohn & Strodtbeck’s (1945) Value Project in which responses to five universal problems are compared. These universal problems describe the relationship of humans to: environment, time, other humans, beliefs about basic human nature, as well as perceived natural mode of acting (Lane, DiStefano, & Maznevski, 1992). Like Hofstede, Kluckhohn & Strodtbeck (1945) set their priorities to the study of values and its variations (Romani, 2004). By adapting the Value Project and by describing culture in the context of value orientation Lane, DiStefano, & Maznevski (1992) identified six cultural dimensions and their range ofvariation:
- Activity (Doing, Being, and Thinking)
- Relationship (Individual, Group, and Hierarchical)
- Human Nature (Good, Evil, and Changeable)
- Environment (Mastery, Harmony, and Subjugation)
- Time (Past, Present, and Future)
- Space (Public, Private, and Mixed)
Lane, DiStefano, & Maznevski (1992) developed a questionnaire to measure variations of dimensions, which was tested on business people and students. By using a value variation it was possible to determine first, second, or third preferences. Findings presented further insights into international management behaviours (Maznevski, 2002, Ramoni, 2004).
The research survey of Lane, DiStefano, & Maznevski differ from other cross-cultural comparative studies. The common characteristic shared by Hofstede (2001) and Trompenaar & Hampton-Turner (2006) is the development of bipolar cultural dimensions which coerce respondents to adapt to one of the two extremes. Lane, DiStefano, & Maznevski (1992) differ on that feature by using value orientations with three instead of two opposed options; alternatives are not mutually exclusive (Ramoni, 2004). Another difference to other studies is that they acknowledge and allow a rank of preference instead of considering only dominant values or behaviours, like Hofstede and Trompenaar & Hampton-Turner do.
3.3.4 The GLOBE Research Project
The latest cross-cultural comparative research study highlighted in this context is the Global Leadership and Organizational Behavior Effectiveness (GLOBE) Research Project. Since 1994, a team of 170 investigators explored values, norms and behaviours in 62 countries. The results are presented as quantitative data based on the responses of approximately 17,000 managers from 951 organizations in three industries (Triandis, 2004). The research program was designed to conceptualize, test, and validate a cross-level integrated theory of the relationship between culture and societal, organizational, and leadership effectiveness (House, 2004a). One major intention was to identify both universally accepted and effective leadership behaviours, attributes, and organizational practises, and those which only apply to some cultures (House & Javidan, 2004; Teagarden, 2005). Research focuses on two fundamental cross-cultural issues: cultural universality and contingency. The information given in the GLOBE Research Project study describes how each society scores on several cultural and global leadership dimensions and identifies nine cultural dimensions (^penď/x: Table 1) (House, 2004b):

The first five dimensions; Power Distance, Uncertainty, Collectivism, Gender Egalitarianism, and Assertiveness; are presented as improved versions of Hofstede’s dimensions including the two subdimensions of his dimension Individualism versus Collectivism. The two dimensions, Gender Egalitarianisms and Assertiveness were developed disentangling elements in Hofstede’s dimension Masculinity versus Femininity (House & Javidan, 2004; Koopman, Den Hartog, Konrad, 1999). According to Koopman, Den Hartog, & Konrad (1999) Future Orientation derives from Kluckhohn & Strodtbeck’s work while Performance and Human Orientation derives from McClelland’s work. The project links its findings to both organizational cultures and leadership attributes. The organizational culture component tries to assess whether organizational culture reflects societal culture, which could be validated, while the leadership component tries to examines universally valid leadership attributes (House, 2004b; Triandis, 2004)
The GLOBE Research Project tries to enhance Hofstede’s societal dimensions and to connect the new measures to organizational culture and leadership. It shares Hofstede's view that culture is a very stable construct and nations are important delimiters of cultural boundaries. The GLOBE Research Project highlighted that cultural dimensions should reflect values, which should then be linked to a functional structure (House & Javidan, 2004; Koopman, et al., 1999; Peterson, 2004; Teagarden, 2005). The GLOBE Research Project as well, contributed to international management behaviours and strategies. Furthermore, they Identified ten regional clusters of societies in order to reduce the complexity of reporting findings as well as minimize national bias (House & Javidan, 2004; Teagarden, 2005). Even if the authors are highly critical of Hofstede’s survey, several assumptions derive from his work (Peterson, 2004) The GLOBE Research Project was conducted in only three Industrial sectors which restricts its generalizability of conclusions (Koopman, et al., 1999). As a further criticism, Teagarden (2005) outlines that the GLOBE Research Project did not make assumptions about how to measure culture; rather they used most meaningful and empirically tested methods.
The review of cross-national comparative research studies shows that comparisons of nations can be categorized by three major themes (Romani, 2004, p.161):
- “country-level analyses are used to study culture”,
- “cultural values or meanings provide real and measurable cultural dimensions with a limited set of variations”, and
- “culture rests on values or meanings that influence individuals’ behaviour and consequently management practises.
Researchers have designed theories and frameworks to explain why people from different countries do things differently (Blom & Meier, 2004). The aforementioned four cross-cultural research studies illustrate the difficulties but also the Importance of Identifying cultural dimension in order to compare nations or cultures. About twenty cultural dimensions have been developed within the field of cross-national comparative research. In order to summarize these dimensions Walker, Walker, & Schmitz (2003) developed the Cultural Orientation Framework which will be Illustrated in thefollowlng pages.
3.4 The Cultural Orientation Framework
With the Cultural Orientation Framework Walker, Walker, & Schmitz (2003) present a secondary researched balanced view on the Impact of cross-cultural issues. It is based on cross-cultural comparative research studies and therefore provides a quantitative and qualitative overview on cultural dimensions. Walker et al (2003) display ten different dimensions, each with constitutive continua, valuable for distinguishing national cultures: Environment, Time, Action, Space, Power, Individualism, Competitiveness, Structure, Thinking, and Communication. By listing these dimensions, they applied three universal criteria (Walker et al., 2003, p.56):
- “each dimension needs to recognize an Important aspect of life”, - “each dimension needs to be linked to “a basic orientation as the shared rationale for behavior”, and - “each dimension has practical value to [...] anyone else who needs to reconcile,
Integrate, or transcend cultural differences".
None of the previously described cross-cultural comparative research studies Identified communication as a dimension in which cultures can be differentiated or measured. Nonetheless, many researchers recognize the coherency of communication and culture; the way to communicate is directly related to the culture in which someone is raised (Hall, 1959, 1976). The study of cross-cultural communication is mainly based on anthropological studies of different cultures. In several publications, Including The Silent Language, The Hidden Dimension, Beyond Culture, and Understanding Cultural Differences, the American anthropologist Hall contributed significantly to the understanding of culture by developing groundbreaking concepts about the different ways we experience the world through communication (Gudykunst, 2003b; Hall, 1959).
In an intercultural business environment, communication is the first cultural attribute in which cultural differences are recognized. If conducting business or simply meeting with individuals who have a different cultural background, their attitude towards most of the dimensions indicated in the Cultural Orientation Framework are less obvious. Someone’s attitude towards environment, power, structure, or individualism, for instance, is difficult to recognize and only noticeable after a while. Differences in communication patterns are more obvious; whether they are communicated verbally, by using a different language or non-verbally, by using different facial expressions, gestures, postures, or voice pitches. Since it is the first noticeable cultural distinction, apart from race, language and other visually attributes, communication, as one of the ten dimensions in which cultures can be differentiated, will be illustrated and its constitutive continuum will be scrutinized as well. In Appendix: Textnote 2 all other nine dimensions are described and linked to the aforementioned cross-cultural research study since Walker et al (2003) do not provide an adequate correlation.
Within the Cultural Orientation Framework the cultural dimension of Communication describes cultural differences in "how individuals express themselves” (Walker et al., 2003, p.56). It recognizes the differences in expressing and exchanging Information. Walker et al (2003) map major distinctions on four continua:

The classification of Formal cultures can be linked to Instrumental, and to some extent to Indirect and High-Context cultures. Likewise, the classification of Informal cultures can be linked to Expressive and to some extent to Direct and Low-Context cultures. It has to be mentioned that a culture is neither one extreme nor the other. It is placed on a continuum with tendencies towards one approach or the other. Each of the four continua will be elaborated in the following paragraphs.
Direct versus Indirect Cultures
The Cultural Orientation Framework Indicates a distinction between Direct and Indirect cultures. Direct cultures value direct communication and an open atmosphere handling conflicts and problems. Conflicts, tensions and feedback are seen as constructive and Important; straightforwardness is Interpreted as honesty and trustworthiness. Open discussions, debates, and negotiations are emphasized; employees feel relatively free to communicate their thoughts and perspectives (Walker et al., 2003). According to Walker et al (2003), a Direct approach to conflict and feedback can be one-way or two-way oriented. In one-way cultures, orders down the system dominate the information flow. In two-way cultures, ‘‘information flows both, up and down the system” (Walker et al., 2003, p.70). On the other hand, Indirect cultures emphasize conflict avoidance and saving face. Indirect societies are carefully in bringing tension into a relationship or contentious topics into a conversation. Open discussions, debates, or negotiations are avoided (Walker et al., 2003).
Expressive versus Instrumental Cultures
A further distinction the Cultural Orientation Framework provides is between Expressive and Instrumental cultures. Expressive cultures display positive and negative emotions freely through body language; emotional alignments are necessary for successful communication. Expressive cultures emphasize “establishment and maintenance of emotional connectedness” (Walker et al., 2003, p.70) over details, facts and accuracy. Hiding emotions is Interpreted as Inapproachablllty or emotional coldness (Walker et al., 2003). On the other hand, in Instrumental cultures, communication is problem-centred, pragmatic, and task-oriented. Cognitive and rational alignment is preferred over emotional alignment; objectiveness, accurateness, and details are valued. According to Walker et al (2003, p.71), “what is said is placed above how something is said”. In contrast, in Instrumental societies, emotions are hidden as much as possible (Walker et al., 2003).
Formal versus Informal Cultures
Cultures can also be categorized by a Formal or Informal approach to communication. Formal cultures value etiquette, protocol and ritualistic exchange. Characteristics of such cultures are hierarchy consciousness, dress, greeting, forms of scheduling and conducting meetings, eating and drinking, or gift exchange; communication in business tend to be more Indirect. On the other hand, Informal cultures value the absence of any strict rules in communication; Information is exchanged freely without boundaries (Walker et al., 2003).
Besides the two already stressed distinctions of the cultural dimension of Communication, the Cultural Orientation Framework classifies societies on a scale of Low-Context- to High-Context cultures. This classification is based on Hall’s studies and is the most common distinctions within the reviewed literature. Hall (1959) argues that the fact how people communicate depends on the context, “the information that surrounds an event; it is inextricably bound up with the meaning of that event” (Hall, 1959, p.34).
Low-Context Cultures
Low-context cultures, such as American, German, Swiss, and Scandinavian societies, place less emphasis on the context of a communication, such as implied meaning or nonverbal messages. Low-context communication is explicit: direct, clear, linear, detailed and verbal (Hall, 1976; Reynolds & Valentine, 2004; Schmidt, 2001). Based on Hall’s findings, Reynolds & Valentine (2004) categorized nine aspects of low-context cultures: verbal communication is emphasised over non-verbal communication; job tasks are separated from relationships and public life is separated from private life; individual initiative, decision-making and achievement are emphasized. Furthermore, they describe employment relationships in low-context cultures as mechanistic. Employees view themselves as a marketable identity and make decisions due to improvement of personal circumstances. In addition, low-context societies tend to rely more on facts, statistics, and other details as supporting evidence, and they are highly sensitive to standardized data and results. They use a direct style in writing and speaking, prefer linear reasoning, and adhere to the letter of the law. They rarely do business on just a handshake. A written document that is agreed upon to is indispensable (Hall, 1976; Reynolds & Valentine, 2004). To conclude, words do not need to be interpreted through the understanding of the culture; communication is straightforward.
High-Context Cultures
In contrast, high-context cultures, such as Arabic, Japanese, and Mediterranean societies, emphasize the context in which communication takes place; they are sensitive to situational or contextual data, and sensitive to implicit information. Communication is defined as implicit: coded, circular, and indirect (Hall, 1976; Reynolds & Valentine, 2004; Schmidt, 2001). In the workplace of a High-Context country like France or Japan, information flows freely from all sides. Reynolds & Valentine (2004) also examine nine aspects of the social framework. In contrast to its counterpart, high-context cultures are categorized as relying on implicit communication, discrepancies between actual words and intended meaning will be recognized; relationships have a greater importance; and collective initiative and decision-making is emphasized. Compared to the mechanistic view of low-context cultures, high-context cultures approach employment relationships more humanistic, and employees are seen as ‘family’ members that work for the good of the group and remain loyal to the company for many years. Furthermore, people from high-context societies rely on intuition or trust rather than facts and statistics; prefer indirect style in writing and speaking; and favour circular or indirect reasoning. They adhere to the spirit of the law and rely less on written contracts (Hall, 1979; Reynolds & Valentine, 2004). Hall (1959) categorizes High-Context cultures as having close personal relationships and extensive information networks, and as avoiding offences. To conclude, communication is implicit; the message comes not only through words but through body language, surroundings, and the relationships between people involved; attention is paid to the circumstances of the communication process (Nolan, 1999; Schmidt, 2001).
In conclusion, the Cultural Orientation Framework, which is based on accepted cross-cultural research studies, presents a qualitative framework for exploring and mapping cultural components. Ten different pre-defined observable dimensions, which are based on values, beliefs, and norms, assist in understanding different cultures. The previously described theories as well as the framework are not meant to be exact and absolutely correct. Rather, they provide an idea of what behavioural tendencies to expect in different cultures. These research studies should be viewed as tools and practical methods for ‘reading’ and understanding a culture which emphasizes variations in individuals’ cultural background. Cross-cultural research knowledge is valuable since it enables to identify not only explicit but also implicit cultural differences to a conscious level (Blom & Meier, 2004; Ramoni, 2004).
As described, cultures can be differentiated and compared by their approach to communication. According to Deresky (2000, p.141), “communication is highly swayed by cultural factors and dimensions”. In other words, any previously described cultural dimension is interpreted through communication. Culture not only determines who talks to whom, about what, and how communication takes place, it also helps to dictate how people encode meanings, circumstances, and conditions under which messages may or may not be transmitted, observed, and interpreted (Deresky, 2000; Guirdham, 2005). According to Samovar, Porter, & Jain (1981, cited by Deresky, 2000, p.141), culture is the foundation of communication since the “entire repertory of communicative behavior is dependent largely on the culture in which we have been raised”. Culture and communication seem therefore to be so intricately intertwined that they are, essentially synonymous.
4 Communication and its Implications
After highlighting the cultural theory and cross-cultural comparative research studies, the attention of the following chapter will be on the application of this cultural knowledge to intercultural communication. What happens when people from different cultures communicate with each other; and how can someone understand the underlying process and adapt his or her cultural approach and expectations accordingly? By using the Cultural Orientation Framework of Walker et al (2003), the subject of culture was researched and scrutinized from the communication perspective. The following chapter will illustrate and evaluate communication from the cultural perspective - especially as relevant to intercultural communication. The topic of communication and intercultural communication will be defined and highlighted and the concept of communication will be reviewed by Introducing several theoretical models. The levels of communication - verbal and non-verbal communication - and their Implications will be defined and Illustrated by several cross-cultural examples. The chapter will close with an interlinkage of communication patterns and cultural dimensions ofthe GLOBE Research Project.
4.1 Definition of Communication
Through communication we learn about ourselves and the world around us; through communication we Identify ourselves and our cultural belonging; through communication we establish relationships with other people, and we express our thoughts and feelings through communication (Deresky, 1999; Nolan, 1999). Similar to the concept of culture there is no generally accepted definition of communication due to its elusiveness, its complexity, and its variation of perspectives on it. Also, communication theories are widely dominated by Western scholars (Llmaye & Victor, 1991). The most common definition of communication describes it as both a conscious and unconscious process of sharing meanings by transmitting messages; collective action in which Information, Ideas, beliefs, attitudes, values and experiences are shared. These messages are transmitted through words or behaviours between the communication partners; from one person - the sender to another person - the recelver(s). Communication consists of both verbal and non-verbal Information and messages with the purpose to achieve shared meanings and understanding. Communication is understood as the mutual transmission of data and signals (Andersen, Hecht, Hoobler, & Smallwood, 2003; Deresky, 2000; Gulrdham, 2005;; Munter, 1993; Maletzke, 1996).
Communication is an extremely difficult process to apply effectively because the recelver(s) often do not Interpret messages as Intended by the sender; Information is often misinterpreted (Deresky, 2000; Reynolds & Valentine, 2004; Rodrigues, 2000). This happens especially when the sender encodes messages by using words, symbols, and concepts which are unfamiliar to the recelver(s) due to different frames of references, different understandings, and different means of communication (Rodrigues, 2000). Due to societal values and norms, each culture develops a unique way of communication - every culture Interprets signs and symbols differently. This uniqueness makes communicating across cultures a challenging task for all Involved (Francis, 1991; Rodrigues, 2000; Schmidt, 2001). Nowadays, communication is seen as a circular process of Ideating, encoding, transmitting, receiving, and decoding of messages4. In most cases this message will be sent back as an encoded response called feedback (Deresky, 2000; Reynolds & Valentine, 2004). Intercultural or cross-cultural communication follows the same process, but done by Individuals who do not necessarily share the same values, norms and beliefs. If sender and recelver(s) have a different cultural background, the chance of accurately transmitting of Information is quite low. The Interpretation of verbal as well as nonverbal messages is based on the context of culture and therefore the major difficulty in intercultural encounters. Thus, the greater the difference between the cultures Involved, the more difficult it is to understand each other (Gudykunst, 2003b; Schmidt, 2001).
The terms ‘intercultural communication’ and ‘cross-cultural communication’ are often used synonymously within the reviewed literature even if differences exist. In his Handbook of Cross- Cultural and Intercultural Communication, Gudykunst (2003a) states, that interculture communication Includes all aspects of the study of culture and communication. Intercultural communication is used to describe the communication between people from different cultures; it focuses on communication. Cross-cultural communication, on the other hand, refers to the comparison of cultural factors Influencing the communication process; it focuses on culture (Gudykunst, 2003a).
4.2 Concepts of Communication
Conceptualized models or paradigms assist in describing communication as a phenomenon; as an observable parameterization or event. In this context, communication is abstracted while functions and relationships are centred (Bolten, 2003; Limaye & Victor, 1991). In the following section, the concept of communication will outline and a critical review on communication models will be given. These communication models are described as an abridgement of the broad and comprehensive field of communication. An elaboration and evaluation of the following communication models will be provided inAppend/x: Textnote 3.
The concept of communication is used in two contrary understandings. The difference in approaching communication has a significant impact on theory construction of cross-cultural business communication (Bolten, 2003; Varner, 2000). Hereby, Bolten (2003) refers to two approaches of defining communication: communication as a linear transmission of information or as a non-linear interaction.
By defining communication as a linear transmission, a certain message needs to be transmitted from a sender to a receiver. The content of communication is centred while the relationship of communicators, their intentions, beliefs, or values are disregarded. Until the 1980’s, many researchers in the field of social science, humanities and economics predominantly used the European and North American cognitive linear concept of communication (Bolten, 2003; Bowman & Targowski, 1989). Examples of linear models are for instance Lasswell’s communication model - “Who says what in which channel to whom with what effect” (Bolten, 2003, p.20) and the Shannon-Weaver's Model, as one of the first and influential models of low-level communication. Also Schramm’s Interactive Model, also known as the Osgood & Schramm Circular Model, which emphasizes the duality of communication, emphasises the linear approach (Mortensen, 1972; Haworth & Savage, 1989). A further example is Berio’s model which Ehninger, Gronbeck, & Monroe describe as "the simplest and most influential message-centred model” at that time (cited by Mortensen, 1972, p.34).
Bolten (2003) argues that linear communication models are highly ethnocentric from a senders’ perspective - the sender only has the choice of accepting or declining the intended information. Although a relationship, which has significant impact on the enunciation and encoding of information, is automatically established between communicators, the focal point of all considerations of the linear concepts is the content that needs to be exchanged (Bolten, 2003; Limaye & Victor, 1991). That is why the ‘wrong word’ or ‘wrong tone’ of a message can influence the relationship between sender and receiver(s) extensively and likewise the following communication content (Mortensen, 1972). According to Llmaye & Victor (1991), and Indicated by the mentioned linear communication models, scholars of organizational management followed the concept of communication as something universal for many years. It has been assumed that concepts and models can be applied across cultures and countries by Ignoring the meaning, purpose, or intention of the participants and the Importance of cultural orientation (Llmaye & Victor, 1991). Bolten (2003) mentioned failures in Introducing Western economic concepts in East Europe due to a lack of compatibility of these Individualistic models in more collectivism societies. The main problems of the above mentioned communication models such as Inflexibility, secluslveness, or disregard of content, meaning and relationship between sender and recelver(s), led some scholars to disprove and reject the initial linear models and to adapt a non-linear approach (Bolten, 2003; Bowman &Targowskl, 1989; Mortensen, 1972).
Since the 1970’s, communication science is widely based on the concept of a circular or non-linear Interaction. Non-linear Interaction of communication is defined by understanding content and relationship as mutual and Interactive (Bolten, 2003). Communication is Interpreted as the complexity of processes and relations (Llmaye & Victor, 1991; Targowskl & Bowman, 1988). Referring to Hall (1976), someone’s communication depends on the context and all the Information Involved in an event; the meaning of that event determines the communication. While the aspect of content conveys data, the aspect of relationship conveys how these data should be Interpreted (Bolten, 2003; Watzlawlck, Bavelas, & Jackson, 2001). An example of the non-linear approach, sometimes referred to as multidimensional communication models, is the Helical Spiral model developed by Dance which defines communication as a dynamic and flexible process in which communication is “constantly moving forward and yet is always to some degree dependent upon the past, which informs the present and the future” (Mortensen, 1972, p.38). Further examples are the Westley and MacLean’s Conceptual Model of sender, message, and recelver(s) which is determined by a continuous selection and transmission of a message, or Becker’s Mosaic Model which emphasizes the meaning of messages (Mortensen, 1972; Targowskl & Bowman, 1988). According to Llmaye & Victor (1991), Becker’s Mosaic model comes closest minimizing the limitation of the linear transmission paradigm. Also Ruesch & Bateson’s Functional Model, Barnlund’s Transactional Model, the Systemic Model of Communication, and Brown’s Holographic Model can be mentioned in this context (Mortensen, 1972; Varner, 2000).
4.3 Levels of Communication
Within each culture, communication is unique, and at the same time, there are systematic similarities and differences across cultures. Communication is realized on two different levels5: verbal communication and non-verbal communication (Gudykunst & Lee, 2003). Following, the two cohesive and alternating levels will be defined and Illustrated in relation to cross-cultural and intercultural communication. Due to its similarities to the topic of culture non-verbal communication will be stressed over verbal communication: “Culture like non-verbal behaviour tends to be elusive, normally out of our awareness, difficult to control, falsify, manipulate, erase, and has a potent influence in intercultural communication” (Wolfgang, 1979, p.162-163).
4.3.1 Verbal Communication
Within the reviewed literature, verbal communication - oral and written - is used as a synonym for language, words, and the meaning of words; it requires the use of vocabulary, symbols and numbers (Deresky, 1999; Rodrigues, 2000; Tovey, 1997). Verbal communication as language is a fundamental aspect of culture, since language describes and categorizes values, beliefs, and norms (Nolan, 1999). Different cultures have different systems of meanings, likewise different systems of verbal communication (Llm, 2003). Each society uses components of languages, such as Idioms, slang, metaphors, and jargon without being aware of it (Nolan, 1999). The cross-cultural problem of language is most obvious when communication partners speak a different language. Many of the components of a language are not easily translatable; some are even untranslatable because the underlying concepts, such as values and basic beliefs, differ across cultures (Guirdham, 2005; Munter, 1993). Someone’s inability to speak or write a local language, or a poor or too literal translation is a frequent cause of mlscommunlcatlon in an intercultural context (Reynolds & Valentine, 2004). Verbal communication is Important for transmitting Information and intentions but less useful for emotions and feelings (Deresky, 2000; Nolan, 1999). As already mentioned in the Cultural Orientation Framework of Walker et al (2003), communication, verbal communication especially, can be distinguished by Low-Context and High-Context communication. Because the proportion of what the context occupies in a message differs widely across cultures and because the way in which cultures use the context in transmitting, translating, and understanding the message is different from culture to culture - from language to language (Hall, 1976; Lim, 2003). English is defined by many researchers as the dominant language in conducting business across nations (Deresky, 2000). According to Trend Letter, April 2002, research shows that about 75% of university students, 70% of managers, and 65% of young adults speak English worldwide, (Reynolds & Valentine, 2004). When speaking about intercultural communication or business communication, it is often referred to as Business English or English for Specific Purpose (Martin, Nakayama, & Flores, 2002; Munter, 1993). The topic of Business English as a possible proof of convergence in intercultural business communication will be unattended in the present thesis.
Communication is more than just using a specific language. Research shows that spoken or written language is not the main channel of transmitting Information. Between 65% and 93% of what is communicated is said by non-verbal messages (Deresky, 2000; Reynolds & Valentine, 2004; Munter, 1993). In this context, Watzlawlck (1967, cited by Andersen et al., 2003) states that someone ‘cannot not communicate’. In other words, even after the verbal communication has stopped, the non-verbal communication can carry on meanings and affect someone’s encoding, Interpretation, and decoding. Even when international business partners speak the same language, non-verbal cues can completely change the meaning of Intended Information (Ekman, 1982; Gesteland, 2003). Although verbal and non-verbal communication often occurs simultaneously, non-verbal communication can occur without verbal communication while verbal communication never occurs without non-verbal expressions.
4.3.2 Non-verbal Communication
Within the reviewed literature, non-verbal communication is understood as the process of transmitting wordless messages and Information. Like verbal communication, it is used for transmitting Information and intentions. Apart of this, non-verbal communication is also particularly Important in the process of revealing feelings, emotions, and attitudes (Blrkenblehl, 1997; Gulrdham, 2005). Hall (1966) refers to non-verbal communication as ‘hidden signals’; it is characterized as being permanent, multi-dimensional, automatic responding, unintended, and difficult to control (Hall, 1976). Non-verbal communication is Influenced by many factors, some of which are innate and genetic, that produce considerable cross-cultural similarities; nevertheless there are also abundant differences which mostly result out of cultural differences (Andersen, et al., 2003; Ekman, 1971, 1982). Several intercultural non-verbal communication studies suggest that cross-cultural differences lie, at least, along seven types of non-verbal communication (for example Andersen et al., 2003; Deresky, 2003; Gesteland 2000; Gudykunst, 2003b; Nolan, 1999):

The following section tries to give an appropriate overview on the Importance of non-verbal communication. The different elements of non-verbal communication will be Introduced and linked to cross-cultural and intercultural communication. Implications will be Illustrated by practical cross-cultural examples. These examples should only be seen as stereotypes (Appendix: Textnote 4). As already mentioned, there is always a variation even within a specific culture and only cultures and not individuals are described.
Kinesics
Kinesics is the study of non-linguistic body movements that include facial expressions, postures, and gestures as the use of head, arms, or hands and the extent it is used (Rodrigues, 2000; Reynolds & Valentine, 2004). Some of these non-llngulstlc body movements are voluntary, others are not; some are explicit and some Implicit (Nolan, 1999). It is argued that kinesics is culturally specific and learned through socialization; therefore it is not generallzable across cultures or nations (Kendon, 2004; Llm, 2003). On the other hand, research shows that most cultures can recognize and understand basic emotions of happiness, sadness, anger, disgust, fear and sadness (Ekman, 1982; Deresky, 2000).
Sticking out the tongue expresses surprise, and scratching cheeks and ears refers to happiness in many Asian cultures but may refer to different emotions in other cultures (Rodrigues, 2000). The interpretation of the American sign of ‘okay’ - thumb-and-foreflnger circle - is Interpreted in Japan as money, in France as zero, and in some Latin American countries as well as in Russia as an obscene gesture (Ekman, 1982; Gulrdham, 2005). Afurther example is the extensive use of hand and arm gestures in Mediterranean societies compared to the limited use of North Americans; too many gestures while communicating orally is seen as a distraction (Blrkenblehl, 1997; Nolan, 1999). Apart of this, kinesics is also expressed through greetings behaviour, such as bowing, hand together, handshaking, or kissing; all of them which differ widely across cultures (Reynolds & Valentine, 2004).
Oculesics
Oculesics refer to the study of eye contact and placement, its proper use, its frequency, and its interpretation. It is one ofthe earliest learned non-verbal behaviours in any culture (Gudykunst & Lim, 2003). Eye contact and placement is separated between eye behaviour for listening and for speaking (Nolan, 1999). Gaze and glance are Important in all cultures and can Indicate interest, approval, attraction, or surprise (Reynolds & Valentine, 2004).
People from very expressive cultures value strong, direct eye contact while Impassive cultures such as many Asian societies, Interpret direct eye contact as hostile and disrespectful (Gesteland, 2003). Widening the eyes Indicates anger in these cultures (Rodrigues, 2000). Avoiding eye contact between superiors and subordinates is interpreted as respectful in many Southeast Asian societies, but is considered disrespectful in Western cultures (Nolan, 1999). Flashing eyebrows could mean interest or surprise in North America, scepticism in Great Britain, hello in the Philippines, and a sign for ‘you are clever in Germany; some Arabs lift their eyebrows when refusing a request politely (Birkenbiehl, 1997; Gesteland, 2003).
Haptics
Haptics is the study of contact and touching behaviour in non-verbal communication. In this context, Hall (1966) distinguishes between high-contact and low-contact societies. High-contact cultures prefer to stand closer, touch more, and experience a ‘close’ sensory involvement while low-contact cultures stand farther apart, touch less, and prefer much less sensory involvement (Andersen, et al., 2003; Hall, 1966; Deresky, 2000).
According to a field study conducted in street cafes in San Juan, Paris, London, and Gainesville, Florida, touching behaviour differs widely across cultures. 170 touches on hand, arm, and shoulder during one hour was counted between a couple in San Juan, a couple in Paris touched 100 times, in Gainesville, Gainsville 2 times, and in London 0 times (Nolan, 1999). The American pattern of shoulder patting, back slapping, or elbow grabbing is interpreted as too intimate in many Scandinavian cultures while Latin American cultures would see this as standoffish and snobbish (Birkenbiehl, 1997). In Arab cultures, a man is forbidden to touch a woman, however it is acceptable for men to touch each other while conversing (Walker et al., 2003; Reynolds & Valentine, 2004). Once a relationship is established in many Asian cultures touching or displaying of emotions is substantially reduced. On the other hand, once a relationship is established between Latin Americans touching and displaying of emotions increases (Rodrigues, 2000).
Proxemics
Proxemics is the study of proximity and space, and the attitude towards it. The term proxemics is introduced by Hall (1966, p.84) who argues that “cultural differences affect the programming of the senses and that space, perceived by all the senses, is regarded as form of territory to be protected”. Different cultures maintain different standards of personal space. Hall (1966) distinguishes between public distance, as the distance used for public speaking; social distance, as the distance used for interactions among acquaintances; personal distance, for interaction among friends; and intimate distance, as the distance used for embracing, touching or whispering. Hall (1959) refers to space required by an individual as a ‘space bubble’, which varies in size according to the cultural identity and the particular situation. A conversational distance which one culture considers as appropriate might be interpreted as aggressive or possibly intimate in another (Gesteland, 2003).
Arab, Latin Europeans, and Latin Americans feel comfortable with a ‘space bubble’ of 20 to 35 cm (8 to 14 inches) while most Asians, Northern, Central, and Eastern Europeans, and North Americans prefer a ‘space bubble’ of 40 to 60 cm (16 to 24 inches) (Gesteland, 2003). When an Arab negotiator invades the comfort zone of a German, the Arab would interpret the German’s stepping back as antipathy (Gesteland, 2003). On the other hand, a Spanish or Mexican could be seen as aggressive invading the comfort zone of an Asian or Northern European (Walker, et al., 2003). In many Asian cultures, once a relationship is established, physical distance is placed between them as a respectful sign of respect while once a relationship is established between Latin Americans, physical distance is reduced (Rodrigues, 2000).
Vocalics
Vocalics or paralanguage is the study of how something is said rather than the content of what is said (Deresky, 2000). It refers to silence as a powerful communication tool due to the way it is perceived, structured, and reacted on (Hall, 1959, I960). An appropriate pause between a statement and a response or between a question and the answer can differ widely across nations (Deresky, 2000). Silence, for instance, may be a way of saying no, of being offended, or ofwaiting for more information to make a decision (Nolan, 1999).
Societies such as North American or many European cultures interpret silence as something negative, whereas those from Asian cultures tend to interpret silence as respectful and positive (Reynolds & Valentine, 2004). In many East Asian cultures silence often means ‘no’, or some Japanese or Thais simply smile or change the subject in order to say ‘no’

Both are highly explicit and refer to shared patterns.
