2.2.2. Development in the Text

There are two developments that are worth a closer look:

1. The change of the protagonists state of mind.

2. The growing importance of the raven.

The different steps are realizable in the subdivision.

In the beginning the protagonist is sad. He is all on his own, trying to distract himself from his sorrow for the girl he lost, Lenore. Then the bird enters the room and brightens up the man’s mood, who is beguiled to smile. The man becomes curious. Talking aloud to himself he receives an answer to the question “what thy [the raven’s] lordly name is“ (l. 47) from the bird, that croaks the only word it knows. When he talks aloud again, telling himself that the bird “will leave [him] as [his] hopes have flown before“ (l. 59) the bird answers a second time. Now he thinks of the bird as a prophet and asks it directly:

- Will he ever “forget this lost Lenore?“ (l. 83)

- “Is there balm in Gilead“ for him? (l. 89)

- Will he “clasp a sainted maiden whom the angels name Lenore“ (l. 94) perhaps in paradise?

- Will the raven “lift [its] form from off [his] door“ (l. 101) again?

All these questions are answered in the negative. The protagonist thinks that the raven speaks of wisdom and therefore he looses all his hopes to be happy again some day and his state of mind changes from sadness to despair.
