5.1.Summary of the plot

In “News from Nowhere”, subtitled “An Epoch of Rest” / “being some chapters from a Utopian Romance”, Morris describes the living conditions of a stable socialist society in London. The story is told by a time traveler named William Guest, who discovers the aspects of the society living without private property in the year 2102. The people of this time explain to him how the change came and how the society is organized now. Moreover, they show him the architecture, the working conditions and the mood amongst the people. The impressed time traveler takes his knowledge with him back to his time and is bent on changing the world. All in all, it is a highly personalized story, which takes its reader on a travel through William Morris vision and which gives concrete answers on questions concerning possible problems of the way such a society is managed.
