The formation of ESDP (European Security and Defense Policy) is one of the most important building blocks shaping the European security structure and the European integration process since the beginning of the 21st century. Even though the integration engine was injured by the rejection of the European Constitutional Treaty in France and the Netherlands, the ESDP can be seen as currently one of the most dynamic areas in European integration. This dynamism takes the
attention of theorists attempting to explain the security and defence integration from their own point of view. Social Constructivism, Realism and Realist version of Liberalism, namely Liberal Intergovernmentalism (LI) are three theories having different emphasis on not only the security integration of the European Union (EU) but also the definition of the security concept.

Zusammenfassung der Kapitel (Chapter Summaries)
1 Introduction: This introductory chapter sets the stage by establishing the ESDP's significance as a cornerstone in the European security architecture and integration process. It highlights the policy's dynamic nature, despite setbacks like the rejection of the European Constitutional Treaty. The chapter also mentions the pivotal role of the St. Malo declaration in accelerating the ESDP's formation and establishing the EU's pursuit of autonomous action. It briefly touches upon the subsequent establishment of key institutions within the EU to support the ESDP and sets the context for further in-depth analysis in the following chapters.
2 Theoretical Framework: This chapter lays out the theoretical groundwork for analyzing the ESDP. It introduces Realism, Liberal Intergovernmentalism, and Social Constructivism, highlighting their differing perspectives on European security integration and the definition of security itself. This chapter provides the analytical tools used throughout the thesis to examine the ESDP’s evolution. The contrasting viewpoints of these theories create a foundation for the comparative analysis of the ESDP's development.
3 European Security and Defence Policy (ESDP): This chapter provides a historical overview of the ESDP's development, tracing its origins from the Amsterdam Treaty to the EU's emergence as a military actor. Key milestones such as the St. Malo Initiative, the Helsinki Headline Goals, and the establishment of the rapid reaction force are examined. The chapter also discusses the role of significant political developments—like the European Security Strategy, the EUMFA, and the Structured Cooperation—in shaping the trajectory of the ESDP. This contextual background is crucial for understanding the complexities of the ESDP.
4 Application of theories of the ESDP: This chapter applies the theoretical frameworks introduced in Chapter 2 to the evolution of the ESDP. It analyzes the ESDP through the lenses of Realism, Liberal Intergovernmentalism, and Social Constructivism, highlighting how each theory offers a unique perspective on the driving forces and dynamics of the policy's development. This chapter provides a crucial synthesis, connecting theoretical concepts to real-world developments in the ESDP.
