Excerpt from the Book

3. Body Language

For successful small talk, it is important to be aware of the fact that “communication happens to eighty or more percent without words”5. Of course, it is important which words we use, because they transport information, but it is even more important what our body tells our partner, since it displays our feelings and emotions. For nonverbal communication we use our facial expression – smiles or frowns, our voice – high or low, the movement and position of our whole body – front toward partner or turned sideways and our eyes – fixed to our partner or roaming the room. In order to appear honest and authentic, it is important, that our verbal and nonverbal elements “speak the same language”. The following example shows a situation, where these elements did not match each other.

A young sergeant with a basic training unit in a short brake during an outdoor class in February tried to impress his trainees with strong words and martial comments about how the cold does not affect him. All the while he was shivering, with his arms pressed to his sides, his hands gloved hands shaking uncontrollably and his eyes darting across the compound. Needless to mention, that his credibility was shattered and the trainees lost interest in him.
