In contemporary time, democracy has turned out to be the most supported political tool for development and social change, which has attained near global acclaim and admiration by many world leaders. Although it is contestable, the reasons for this vary. First, democracy has gained acceptability as a form of government based on equity and justice. Secondly, it purports to uphold the rule of law, and as well, guarantee the preservation of human rights.
As it is assumed that effective strategies adopted and properly implemented by a nation have the tendency to accelerate progress in the development of the said nation, this work examined some strategies for sustainable development in Nigeria. It highlighted existing strategies for development in the country, examined progress and challenges in implementing the strategies, and further identified measures which when adopted and implemented, will likely change the social, economic, and political condition of the country for economic growth and sustainable development.

  • Examination of the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in Nigeria.

Excerpt from the Book

Curbing Endemic Corruption

Corruption is one of the diseases which have plagued Nigeria. In other words, it is one of the greatest challenges of Nigeria. A country with endemic corruption is unable to function effectively to achieve sustainable development because, sustainability does not thrive in an unconducive and corrupt environment. Some of the leaders transfer funds illegally into offshore bank accounts thereby leaving the country in debt burdens. One good example is the late General Sanni Abacha’s transaction with the Swiss Bank. Having investigated an alleged theft of US$ 2.3 billion under Abacha’s administration, another investigation was done following an allegation of US$ 2 billion fraud by some members of Abacha’s regime.

On many occasions, contractors mismanage the funds given to them for development projects like road construction, procurement of energy transformers, housing and other important projects. There is need to improve on some anticorruption measures in the country in order to help strengthen governance and public sector management. This will include improving public participation projects to ensure that the funds go through the right direction. Also, the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) which is responsible for the prosecution of financial culprits should be strengthened in order to curb the endemic corruption in Nigeria. The commission should ensure that such culprits are duly punished so that such criminal acts will end to give way for sustainability in Nigeria.
