Excerpt from the Book

The role of Pentecostals in the Ecumenical movement in Ethiopia

Pentecostal history is often related with schism and division as it is true of the Ethiopian Pentecostal movement. With all the odds Pentecostal movements had they have contributed for the renewal and ecumenical strengthening of Ethiopian protestant denominations within the given socio-political context. The historical context the Pentecostal movement took over was a transitional period in the countries politics. The Solomonic dynasty was highly backed by the Ethiopian Orthodox church and the church also used governmental means to suppress mission works if she feels suspicious of their work. This relation is precisely described by Oyvind M. Eide. He says, “the imperial center, monolithic and uniform as it may seem, is in other words a body with two heads, the emperor and the patriarch.” This strong marriage between the EOTC and the monarchy has opened a door for others to cooperate for a common cause as they perceive themselves persecuted. The already established churches like Mekane Eyesus opened their doors for the Pentecostals hoping that they would follow the normal traditional way of worship and in many cases they brought some splits as they introduced new forms and as a result the leaders of Mekane Eyesus were challenged. But the great forcing power for the protestant church to come together did not happen during the Monarchical period rather later in the Marxist period that started with the persecution of Pentecostals that intensified to the Evangelicals. This historical period with the fuel of pentecostal practices has helped many protestants to see themselves as belonging to one entity that has continued even long after the fall of the Marxist government.

Summary of Chapters

1. Introduction: The chapter outlines the concept of ecumenism and presents the core argument that Pentecostalism, despite its challenges, has served as a binding force for the Protestant church in Ethiopia.

2. Christianity in Ethiopia and the introduction of foreign mission: This section provides a historical overview of the introduction of Christianity to Ethiopia and the subsequent, often complex, arrival of various foreign missionary groups.

3. The beginning of Pentecostalism: The author explores the roots of the Pentecostal movement in Ethiopia, highlighting the difficulty in identifying a single origin point and discussing the influence of foreign and local initiatives.

4. The role of the New movements in the Ecumenical movement in Ethiopia: This chapter analyzes how Pentecostal practices contributed to church renewal and the creation of a collective Protestant identity, particularly under political pressure.

4.1. Creation of ECFE and its challenge: This part examines the formation of the Evangelical Churches’ Fellowship of Ethiopia as an umbrella organization to facilitate interdenominational cooperation.

5. Conclusion: The author summarizes the findings, noting that while Pentecostalism fostered unity, the church still faces challenges regarding denominational fluidity and relations with the Ethiopian Orthodox Church.
