This paper focuses on Jeunet's use of post production techniques to create a distinctive atmosphere or 'mise-en-scene' to the narrative, arguing that these processes create another layer of meaning to the action on screen. It also looks into the wider issue of Jeunet's representation of Paris itself, arguing that although he has created an unrealistic image of the city with little notion of the 'real' Paris that these aspects contribute to the success of the film. Finally, it analyses the postmodern techniques Jeunet employs, arguing that by utilising these techniques within the scene he has a stronger hold on his directorial control, creating an engaging film that not only draws the audience further into the action, but aids his own postmodern ideal of grasping onto the small pleasure in life. These factors all work hand in hand within this short scene, Jeunet marries this mix of techniques together to create an aesthetic signature that adds to the success of his award winning film.

Objectives and Topics

The primary objective of this work is to provide an in-depth textual analysis of the final scene of the film "Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain" (2001), specifically examining how meaning is constructed through the synthesis of post-production techniques, postmodern stylistic choices, and the specific representation of the Parisian environment.

  • Analysis of micro and macro textual features in the film's final scene.
  • Evaluation of post-production techniques including digital color manipulation and camera styles.
  • Application of semiotic theory to understand signs and signifiers within Jeunet's cinematic world.
  • Investigation of the controversial "sanitized" representation of Paris as a postmodern construct.
  • Examination of the "breaking of the fourth wall" as a postmodern directorial strategy.

Excerpt from the Book

The Integration of Mise-en-scène and Mise-en-shot

Jeunet establishes the magical yet hermetic world of Amelie using a palette of greens and reds with a sepia vignette that adds a distinctive storybook-effect to the unfolding narrative. Buckland (2008) describes mise-en-shot as the stage of film production that exists prior to filming, a term invented by the Soviet film-maker Sergei Eisenstien. It is undeniable that Jeunet treats the relation between mise-en-scene and mise-en-shot equally, creating a great interaction between the post production techniques and what we see on screen, marrying together a visual motif with action to create and enhance deeper meanings within the text.

Jeunet utilised digital editing throughout the entire picture as well as instances of computer-generated animation and the digitizing process, Digital Intermediate (DI) was used to manipulate and enhance colourisation and image characteristics, such as the use of contrast through yellow and green light filters. The DI provided a higher screen resolution and a greater colour fidelity than ordinary chemical film stock, and this shines through with the very identifiable 'French' mise-en-scene that saturates across the whole film and is prevalent in this scene in particular.

Summary of Chapters

1. Introduction to the Textual Analysis of Amélie: This chapter introduces the scope of the analysis, focusing on the final moped scene as a representation of the protagonist's character arc and the director's unique aesthetic.

2. The Integration of Mise-en-scène and Mise-en-shot: This section details how digital post-production techniques and specific color palettes are used to create a "storybook" atmosphere that enhances the narrative.

3. Semiotics and Ideological Analysis in Cinematic Construction: This chapter applies Saussure’s linguistic model to the film’s imagery, arguing that the director's signs and colors act as tools for constructing a subjective reality.

4. The Representation of Paris and the Postmodern Landscape: This section explores the critique of the film’s idealized, sanitized version of Paris and addresses the lack of multicultural representation in the setting.

5. Postmodern Techniques and the Breaking of the Fourth Wall: This chapter analyzes how the characters' direct interaction with the camera functions to draw the audience into the film's postmodern subtext.

6. Conclusion on Jeunet's Aesthetic Signature: The final chapter summarizes how the synthesis of these techniques serves to celebrate the triumph of imagination over realism.
