“Text Analysis provides some insight of the media messages but it is the CPE (Critical Political Approach) that truly explains the working of the media in present times.”
This essay is about the evaluation of the above said statement in context of the ‘advertising’ that is one of the most popular sectors of the modern media.
The advertisements can be portrayed as a medium of communiqué created to reach a large number of audiences with no individual contact between the advertiser and the viewer. This includes several mediums of advertisements like magazines, books, newspapers, websites, radio, cinema and television. Everywhere we get to see loads of advertisements selling one or the other product or service. These advertisements are indeed influencing our lives to a great extent. For example, we are always keen to buy the deodorant or the perfume we last seen in the advertisement without even analyzing its effects on our body. Similarly, our kids become crazy about the new flavored toothpaste advertised last week without taking much interest on its benefits to the teeth and bad breathe. This is the big virtual world where we all are living and we are happy to see these advertisements for both entertainment and awareness.
But the big question is: Whether these advertisements are influencing our minds negatively or positively? To find out the answer to this question, researchers have adopted 2 dissimilar approaches; Text Analysis and Critical Political Economy.

3. Critical Political Economy Approach
The critical analysis of the advertisements is now the trend for the researchers to critique the media. Communication is persistent in our culture. There are now distinct choices through which we can access the advertisements. From reading the print advertisements on our tablets and mobile phones to listening or viewing the moving advertisements on satellite channels, we are guzzled by the advertisements and media in this age of electronics. Moreover, these advertisements are the basis of our decision making while purchasing any product or service. We even value these advertisements as the watchdog of our society hence it is the need of hour that such media should be critically analyzed. This type of analysis is required to understand the main point that is communicated through the advertisements, why some points are so enveloping whereas some highlights are not even noticed in these advertisements. The Critical Political Economy (CPE) approach is beneficial tool that lets use to examine the advertisements critically and to understand the biases adopted by the media.
The CPE involves the complete study of the effects put on by the advertisements over the different economic classes that have distinct ways to access these advertisements. Like different people can access the same advertisement through different mediums for example through cell phone, television, radio, magazine and even through the websites. The Critical Political Economy approach also identifies how the commercial ownership influences the advertisements produced by the media. As a whole, this political approach allows the researchers and media experts to have the deep insight of the industry and its influential power over the society and our culture.
